Idaho is really relaxed, they let me register and 81 toyota with no bed, lights, seats or dash a few years back. All they check is the VIN number and hand you plates. I also lived in cali and idaho isnt a bad place to call home. I do love it here.
ok so, being ignorant to the CA laws, do you not have to get an annual inspection sticker? I assume this because of the hassle that it would be to swap back in the diesel engine every time you go to get a sticker.
Why does Cali want keep modified cars/trucks off the road, damn luxury states haha. I know here in MD the only thing you need is a full set of lights, complete exhaust(which doesn't even get checked), and if your car is not tagged historic/street rod you get an emissions test every 2 years. Also if your car doesn't pass emissions you only have to spend $400 in parts/labor in order to pass, and if it fails they give you a 2yr free pass because you already spent money. When I had my stealth I would just go buy a ton of engine parts that would cost $400 and have fun with it, then complain that i've tried to get it to pass and they write a forbearance every time I say go for it and if you have to go in for inspection just fab up a quick dress up it so they cant tell whether its diesel or a bawls to the walls o-zone killing beast
In cali we have to smog every 2 years. Each year we have to pay for new tags. Only vehicles that dnt need smog are anything 1975 or older, diesels, and the obvious electric vehicles
I'm soo with you on this idea. phuck Cali smog nazis - they all work for car dealerships anyhow trying to get us to trash our vintage quality and buy their newer Pieces of chit. If we can get a few guys on this I think we could lower the initial cost on the the purchase of a 2L toyota slutwhore. Get it inspected, once we have the fuel change on the registration we're set, no more smog. we'll be done with the replacing of cats every 2 yrs or sweating at the sniffer station to see how bad the tech will rape us in the pocket. That is exactly opposite of everything I know to be true. Diesels are considered a higher polluting powerplant and up until recently they didn't bother to deal with emission standards because they weren't very sought after in the mass market. As for making a lot of power sure you can with a lot of diesel engines but a 2l/2lt toyota engine isn't one of them. I've seen guys crank the ballsack out of them and get a bunch of power but they don't hold up for long. Much like a 250 hp R series yota. Yea it's fast a all hell for a week or so at a time then it blows the fawk up. I know a few kommifornia people that have started out with a set of VIN plates that were for a diesel and there is no emission testing at all for them so they swap in V8's and whatnot with zero issues.
White Trash. I kno diesels throw out alot more crap. But from things ive looked at i think they dnt smog them cuz they dnt know wat to base the emmissions test off of. Obviously they throw out puffs of black smoke but maybe they emit different gasses?? Idk, i dnt know diesels all that well.
Look again they ARE doing smog checks on diesels now. We had to change the engine on my refer unit to meet CA emissions standards for commercial trailers. They are doing spot checks on semi trucks that are idling in many places too. Don't kid yourself they ARE coming for you eventually so get a set of diesel VIN tags on there while you still can and get grandfathered in when it happens.
california doesnt like diesels... as far as i know you cant swap a diesel into a non diesel truck or car.
