Hello, my name is Chris and I live in Oregon. I have a 1980 Toyota 2wd with a w50 5spd transmission. I bought the truck two years ago with about 150K original miles. Just prior to that, I had a boat stolen and when I finally found it, the only thing I had to go get it with was my little Toyota. Getting it out of the hills and back home proved to be too much for my little truck and a couple months later, the tranny pooped out on me. I have an opportunity to get a great deal on a w55 with new clutch, pressure plate, and throw out bearing for only $125.00, however, the guy tells me I have to use my own tail housing from my w50 tranny in order for the shifter hole to match correctly. As a true NON-Transmission knowledgable person, I am not sure if I can complete this transfer without some professional assistance, or at least some feedback from others who know more than I, even if they haven't done the swap themselves. That is what brought me to this site and I am sure I will have lots of reasons to stay and use it for years to come. Thank you all in advance and hope to hear from some of you soon! Sincerely, Chris Hughes
welcome to the site,im sure someone will chime in soon with the info you need, if not im pretty sure there are a couple of threads already started on the subject and you should be able to find it easily with the search option, good luck with your truck!
Yah man cant really help on this matter but welcome all the same. Im kinda feeling it wouldnt be more than a few bolts and swap the tail shafts since the gearing and such should be in the main housing but I could be wrong.
Depending how far the shifter is off. you could prob. just enlarge the hole the shifter goes through. Cheap and easy way.
You shouldn't have any shifter location issues dropping in that W55... If anything will hold you up it'll be the the tranny mount bracket...
