so i plan to do my timing chain next week and i have been told engnbldr is a good site to order from. who has used this site and is it a good place to order from also what do i need to order? my truck has 113000 miles and i think the guides are broken so ill need a timing chain kit gasket set and probably water pump? anything else?
a nice garage, time, patience, and all fluids necessary. A member has stated that he used a cardboard with the parts drawn out and holes made so he can put the bolts into it so he doesn't lose it. Marking everything is critical. Have the proper tools, do you have a breaker bar (recommended 1/2inch drive) with a 19mm socket for the crankshaft bolt? Is your truck an automatic or manual? Hopefully manual, it'll make the installation process much much easier. Has your timing guides broken? If yes, you *should* drop the oil pan to clear it out, but that's up to YOU. If no, you can just leave that oil pan in there. Only way you will know is when you take your valve cover off. But you're diving in anyway. Water pump, depending on the condition, you may not need a new one. I still have my factory water pump. I use Toyota RED coolant though. You may also need a seal puller for the crank seal. You'll be replacing that thing. engnbldr.com should have Ted's email on there. send him a message and chat with him for a bit, he should have you covered easily. I got the steelbacked guides in my kit. Toyota-22R-RE-HotLicks Go to THAT page and order the... TKS900SR Timing Chain set with Driver side steel rail 85-95 56.00 For ~$60 I got EVERYTHING neccessary. He provides gaskets, chain, sprockets, a tensioner, the seal, and a few more nick nacks I can't remember, including your new guides you will install. If your timing cover hasn't worn through, you could leave it. If it got worn a bit, and looks deeeeeeeply gouged, I suggest having someone weld a bead down so give more material and buying yourself a lil "insurance" before it goes to hell. And before you tear her down, Do you have A/C or powersteering? make sure the tension idle pulley adjusters (the loooong bolts on it) aren't stuck. I went a year without A/C because I can't get a belt on it. So i had to do some cutting and extra work just to get to a bolt... to get my A/C good luck!
How hard is it to do a timing chain replacement on a 94 with manual transmission and no AC and no power steering? I'm far from a mechanic but have pretty decent mechanical skills. Is this process something that could be completed in 1 day? Is there somewhere to get step by step instructions?
I'd rate the timing set as about a 2 banana difficulty. It's not hard but it is intimidating to those that haven't done it. Drawing out a rough cardboard picture of the timing cover so you get the proper bolts back where they belong is a great idea. There are about 17 bolts in the timing cover and damned near all of them are different. You do not have to remove the head to do the job, just loosen the oil pan and let it drop down so the cover can be pulled and put back on. Don't forget the bolt under the distributor drive gear in the puddle of oil! Many a timing cover has been busted from hamfisted "mechanics" forgetting about it and prying the cover off. The easiest way to get the crank bolt off is to use a breaker bar under the frame then hitting the key. Those bastids are incredibly tight from the factory so if it hasn't been off you'll thank me for the tip. Engnbldr kits are great, I have used his parts for years and never had an issue. Great prices too.
WT - Thanks for the reply it definitely gave me a vote of confidence and I'll take your advice on the cardboard for the nuts and bolts. " The easiest way to get the crank bolt off is to use a breaker bar under the frame then hitting the key. Those bastids are incredibly tight from the factory so if it hasn't been off you'll thank me for the tip." Just to be clear on your quote above you are saying get a breaker bar connected to the crank bolt, letting it hang down to the frame and then turn the ignition to get the bolt loose?
Yup! Pull the coil wire si it won't start, slap the breaker bar under the passenger frame rail and hit the key. The last one I did was a virgin so the truck jerked pretty good when the bolt came loose.
^ LOL!!!! virgin Removal of the radiator will give you ALOT of space. So something to drain the radiator, something to drain the oil. I had the front end of my truck on jackstands, that extra room is nice. Without P/S or A/C, it makes things MUCH easier. Manual transmission makes the installation of the crank bolt EASIER. (highest gear, ebrake on, chock the wheels) And also get a torque wrench! get everything done right So oil filter (yzz-D3 from toyota itself or Purolator PUREOne filter), Pennzoil Platinum 10W-30 from WalMart in the 5qt jug for ~$20, and Toyota red coolant from CarQuest. Just making sure the truck gets the loving it deserves if you want her to last! Once you're done, you'll think she's easier than a highschool girl. lol. what do i know about either one? Toyota 22R Timing Chain Replacement- ORN If I find more info, i'll post up.
In the repair manual it says you have to loosen the engine mount, i forget which one. Do you really need to?
BTW, you don't HAVE to remove the head if you are careful. you can remove the valve cover and timing cover. that will give plenty of work room. the head gasket change is optional. not neccessary unless you mess it up. The timing cover WILL have two bolts vertically on the bottom from the oil pan. Don't forget RTV sealant, or "black" stuff from Autozone. stuff works well. As for me, I had a tough time getting the oil pan dropped. I removed steering linkages (which i didn't need to do), unbolted the oil pickup tube, unbolt both engine mounts and jacked the truck up. I recommend removing the crossmember that goes under the motor. Those will help give space. it was my last resort move. a little too much work honestly. AND remember to have PB blaster to soak the bolts to help break them loose. brake/ carb cleaner and other stuff to help prep surfaces WILL significantly help. and maybe a pack of beers if you're old enough
