Ok I have an 85 toyota pickup that I have no intention on bagging because I am fine with where it sits with a static drop. Anyways the truck is being built for track use/cruising days. I am leaving the stock gas tank where it is at so I am wondering if one of the univeral 4-link setups will work for me? The 22R motor will be fully built and supercharged when its all done and over with so I need a setup in the front and the back that can handle the power. Also when it comes to this stuff I am a complete newb, but have not been able to find a setup for springs/coil overs and I am unsure if a bag setup will work?
well if you looking to put it on the track bagging it would just make more weight (tanks, compressors, brackets) My buddy has a dakota that he used a parallel foward 4 link with coil overs behind the axle I suggest doing this because you can get a fully adjustable setup if your not looking to bag
no, the universals will not work. you need to run some form of a 3 link or move the tank. no way around it.
Ok is there a 3-link setup already made? Like I said i'm a complete newb with this stuff so any help is extremely appreciated! Also: with coilovers can I use the stock shock mount setup?
In the front u can use the stock shock mount but you would have to gusset the living hell out of it to the point where youl realize you should have just built a new one. lol Talk to Seth(twistedminis) or BeefedTaco they could help you with the rear setup. Honestly you could get away with a 2 link with a watts link. unless you want more adjustability from your link bars then id say look for a parallel 4 link. you can find them premade at JEGS or Summit.
No 2-links...especially not if you're going to track it. I developed a Toyota specific 3-link kit a while back, but there was pretty much no interest in it.
Also with coilovers, I have not done it, but I make some upper arms that get rid of the cross shaft and stock shock mount, and a few guys have used those arms to run coilovers. That way they could get whatever size shock in there at whatever ride height, and build a nice strong mount.
My actual plan was CO's on the back and shocks/springs on the front. I want to be able to pick up the back end for wider tires for the track. Twisted: you have pm!
Forward facing 99% bolt on 4 link kit was made for this 04 S runner with super charged V6 running QA1 coil overs front and rear. Only one on customtacos. This truck is FAST, and now has handling to match. I worked around the gas tank and only had to make a bolt on exhaust hanger and gas tank strap mount. The rear coils were too soft and he supposedly has new ones he needs to bring me so we can try them. This is why the adjuster rings are turned all the way up in the pics and lower shock mount isn't in the middle hole, but in the top one. I had a lot of fun building this setup, and have been wanting someone with a pre 95 (and the $) to bring me their truck so I can have a bolt on kit available for these sweet little trucks too. I did this one in just under 2 weeks.
Check out my build... I did exactly what you are looking for except I moved the tank to behind the axle helps with weight distribution. The UCA are from Seth(twisted minis). http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/build-up-project-threads-25/invasion-body-snatchers-1252/
I'm not sure about trying to fit springs and a shock up front. I think you would end up with a very short spring, and probably not much travel. I think coilovers would be better.
Ok so i'm not sure about moving the tank because of the extra wire for the gauge, moving the filler neck, redoing the metal lines.... After looking at the 3-link I don't think I like the setup so I guess i'm moving the tank. Any ideas on the easiest way to move this thing?
check this out........ as for moving the wires for the sending unit..... you just need to create a longer harness and match the wires. not a big deal. i ran my stock tank length-wise but across the rails can also be done. this was all fab work done by beef taco...... This is the link kit I was working on. Stock tank location raised a little, and all fits under the stock bed floor.
SDYOTA: I like that setup! It doesn't put the tank too close to the ground does it? hard to tell where it sits. TM: going with the 4-link because I think it will do its job better.
Just keep in mind things like instant center, and roll center. Its pretty easy to install a 4-link and get bad results. There is some good info out there you should probably read up on before tackling this project. Books by Carrol Smith are a good start.
Oh trust me I will not be doing the welding on this part! I have a guy locally that does bags so depending on how much he wants he will prolly do it.
