you can hold it down and start the truck with your foot off the clutch. used mostly for starting the truck while being outside the truck, or some other offroad function im not aware of

just a FYI....Mine doesn't need to be held down, just pressed once before starting.

Most all newer manual trans rigs have a clutch start switch that requires the clutch be pushed in to start so it can't accidently be started in gear with the clutch not depressed. Why they put them in the 4x4 trucks only I don't know, possibly if in an off road situation where it needed to be started without pushing the clutch or for maintenance purposes  but its just a 2 wire switch similar to a brake light switch connected to the clutch pedal under the dash, unplug the wires and connect them together to bypass the switch and now it'll start without pressing the clutch, simple :)

My truck is a regular 2wheeldrive and it has it. Does anybody know if there is a performance diference between a 4 wheel drivc motor and a regular, maybe for the weight difference or something?

other then the weight of the transfer case and front suspension there are no differenced between the 2x4 and the 4x4

also if you want to take out your clutch saftey switch just remove it and jump the 2 wires.

When you guys say your base 2wd has it, are you meaning it has the clutch switch on the pedal or the dash mounted bypass switch? the earlier trucks, mid 80's and up should all have the pedal switch, but as far as I remember they only had the dash bypass switch on the 4x4 models, but that could have changed on the later models, I play with the early trucks so don't keep up on the later ones as to what they had or didn't have.

I was talking about the button on the dash. My 92 4x4 has one, my 94 2wd does not. I always assumed the wiring is there though on the 2wd. Can't verify as I have never actually looked.

Thanks EFnetOper, Thats what I was thinking was the 4x4's had the dash mounted bypass switch and the 2wd didn't. but both have the clutch pedal switch.
