ive got a 1985 xtra cab 2wd 22r 4spd. im looking to swap in a 5spd and a different rear end. i was wondering what tranny would bolt up to my 22r and what i need to get it out of. also any rear end suggestions would be appreciated. thx in advance
Ok this might seem stupid to most, but can I ask why you are switching to a 5-speed? For reference: I know two guys locally with 80's yota trucks and they both run 22r, 4-speed tranny, and 5 speed rear-end. With that said they both runs mid-low 11's.
i do alot of highway travel, itd be nice to have a 5th gear. right now it just sounds like its gonna blow up high into 4th. could i change out the rear end and fix that problem? the truck needs alot of work, i got it from my grandad who used it as a firewood delivery truck.....
if you would like to setup your truck nice for highway speeds and better gas mileage........ keep your 4 speed rear end, and swap in a 5 speed trans. the 5 speed will give you better gear ratios..... but keeping the 4 speed rear end will increase your final drive ratio witch will help you keep a lower rpm on the highway at the same speed as before. this is the setup i had in mine. for example....... with a stock 4 speed trans, 4 speed rear end...... i would do 80mph @ 3600 rpms after the 5 speed swap with the 4 speed rear end, i would do 80mph @ 3000 rpms.
any other vehicle with a 22r, 22re, 22rte, etc....... so long as whatever toyota you find has a (R) code in the motor, the bellhousing will fit.
For 150 you can have my engine and trans if picked up> 22re with 5 speed but it doesn't run.. fuel injected swap at the same time though?
I honestly cannot say what they are shooting for Nos, but I know both trucks have 22r's that are fully built and both have SC's on em.
