**CLIFF NOTES*** -Truck studders and dies while in gear -Battery, oil, and brake lights come on in cluster Hi everyone, I just bought an 86 today and am having a strange problem. Before I bought it I replaced the starter and fuel pump/filter just to get it running. After getting it running I took it for a test drive and it drove like a dream. It hick-upped/studdered in 3rd once during the test drive so i just down shifted to 2nd then shifted back to 3rd and all was good. I then proceeded to purchase the truck after a satisfied test drive. I then go pick up my buddy and needed gas so I filled up. Leaving the gas station is when my problem started. We were just cruising around and it studdered in 2nd and just died. My battery, parking brake, and oil light came on. I pulled over restarted and limped my way home but the whole way home the problem persisted in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear, intermittantly, but got gradually worse and worse to the point where it would make it 20 feet or so before dieing. Would low tranny fluid cause this or is the tranny on its way out? Side note, it shifts fine in and out of gears and the clutch seems fine but the studder feels like its coming from underneeth the truck. Things done to truck within my time involved and aware of. -New starter -New fuel pump and filter -Before I did the pump the previous owner put in HEET because she thought the fuel line was frozen. She put in about 1 1/2 bottles and one bottle is meant to treat 20 gallons. This makes me very skeptical as a possible culprit to my problem. Could too much HEET additive cause my symptoms? She added it on a near empty tank but then I filled up full after I bought it. Any help is appreciated and sorry for the novel of a post.
Okay thats good to know. Like I said the previous owner put in more than enough HEET trying to un-freeze the fuel line. Wouldnt the HEET have solved this problem? How should I approach this from here?
Assuming you already checked distributor cap for ware and plugs. It would seem as the only other culprit. How much fuel was in tank when prev owner put a bottle and a half in tank? No guaranties I'm correct, its just what I'd check next. 6 bolts and you can remove bed. Tank is there, you would need to drain to see water. GL Also please let us know what the problem is when you do find out, so many unfinished threads where people find out the problem and never post it up for others who may have similar problem
yea sounds like something with the motor not the transmission. Go back to basics start with your air/fuel/spark. determine where its failing and proceed from there
Thanks for the replies guys. I just went outside and let the truck warm up for awhile. I was looking at the fuel filter and it was really bubbly (like its to large). Im going to run to the parts store in a bit and pick up a new one. Im hoping this will be the fix!
I replaced the sh!tty plastic universal fuel filter for a new glass one and it runs great. I got a little worried yesterday.
be sure to change that filter every year! these 22r's are really picky when it comes to fuel and the filter makes a big difference.
