Inland empire area here. Lookin for tips of hookin up my Super clean stock 1981 SR5 shortbed. 536,000 miles and still runnin smooth. Any tips on upgrades etc.. would be much appreciated. I dont know much about engines but am mechanicially inclined and do all my own work so long as I have a Haynes and Chiltons handy. I would like to increase HP and MPG (currently about 20 round town and 25 or better on the hwy). I have restored / rebuilt a few volkswagons in the past but have always been in love with the old yota's since I was 6 off roading in my dads 82' 4x4.
536,000 miles? wow gotta love the toyotas. I do not know much about motors either, i am more of an electronics guy. I do want to say welcome and you came to the right place for toyota information.
536K but how many engines is that??? Might be factory set engine that would be killer sweet. Had a diesel benz with about 480k on 2nd engine but dang half a million miles somebody did something right and it sure wasnt the USA welcome to the site. I dont know about getting you better MPG maybe a HHO conversion if you like to experiment. As far and more HP Id say slap a weber on there, maybe some exhaust, I dont know much about your year motor but Id assume a cam wouldnt hurt if you can find one, a few other bolt ons. OR scrap your engine and drop a newer version in.
welcome to the site Bro, It has always been my experance that when you mess with the stock Crap when you have high millage, you wind up killing the motor.. Lot of Great Ideas here thow... Welcome to the site
The motor is original. Ill get some pics up as soon as I can. I am saving to rebuild the motor, but have thought about letting her die and throw in a 90's fuel injected engine but I love the carburator (and the fact that its OG). Buddy of mine is a mechanic (new age doeesent know much about carburators) and said he would help for ****s and giggles. The current 22r is very clean inside for being 30 years old. Does anyone know where to find the serial number or vin number on the block? I purchased this years ago off the original owner (old man that the DMV took his license) but for piece of mind I would like to know for "certain" this is the original engine. I have done some work here and there on her but she still needs a break master cylander, front end seal, new head light harneses and misc. other crap. She is a trooper and I have taken her on multiple trips to UTAH, Vegas and I am heading to Santa Barbara this weekend.
Pull motor install new version but keep all your stock parts and engine in storage so you can always go back to orig
