probably the increase in torque along the powerband.

yea, peaky torque band. What mods do you have done? could be something decreasing torque down low or helping it up high, intake pipe mods, big unrestrictive exhaust, etc.

Same realm as miatas and the intake pipe resonator, without the resonator they get a nice torque dip at 3k (?) rpm, some people remove it for a bigger smooth pipe (for more power ;-)) and go slower.

Never had a "vtec kicked in" moment. But I can definatly tell its getting on the cam (into the power curve) around IDK 4,500 to 4,800 rpm.

You guys's motors probably have streched chains, weak tensioners, and loose valve lash. Everything needed for a real good "top end" motor. No joke.

A retarded cam moves the power up. And thats what slack (in the timing system) does.

my mods um a 4 runner guage cluster a air filter found in the mud and a new intake gasket haha really nothing moded to my truck beside 4 runner front end conversion and seafoam i really enjoy it tho it sounds unique and my power hops up right when accleration gets to the slowing point in a gear it hit i hop up 10 mph in a snap my gears run out at 1st:40 2nd:60 3rd:90 4th:110 i guess 5th:? it helps out when i do mountain runs i can come out a mild turn like 85-90 and sharp 50-60 cant do it right now rears are losing tread and well fronts the camber has an effect as well

that effect you feel is just the increase in torque when you gun it along.

I've noticed mine does that too, in 2nd. And my timing chain and all that is good, had it done last year.

that's just the power band... notice when you shift up and your RPM's are exactly where that "VTEC" feel comes back in. just the way of the motor

What year 4runner cluster do you have in your truck? Do you know if its from a 3.slow engine model runner or the early 90's 22re model?

SR5 trucks and some other trucks have the tach, if you get the correct one from the correct drivetrain, you can just swap it over.
