Putting this 32/36 on my 78 pickup...went to turn the key and the damn thing won't idle....just revs real high. Adjusting the idle speed and idle mixture screws was not making any difference. I sprayed some carb cleaner around the base gasket and adapter plates to check for a leak...but the thing is already reving so fast and loud I don't know if I'd hear it going up. I attached a couple of photos...can you see what I did wrong? All of the air intakes for the original air filter are open and unplugged. There is also a hose that ran from the stock carb to the charcoal canister that is just sitting open. The only apparent vacuum on the carb is running to the distributor Thanks in advance for the expert advice.
Hard to see anything from the pictures, but as long as the pcv valve hose is connected and the vacuum port on the carb base is plugged, it should run and idle. I would go back and check that the linkage is not binding, overtightening the throttle shaft nut where the linkage arm attaches to the carb will cause binding. Then check that the throttle is not stuck on the fast idle cam for the choke, are you possibly turning the fast idle adjustment screw instead of the idle speed screw? Make sure the choke is fully open and the throttle linkage is fully closed, throttle plates inside the carb should be shut completely, back off the idle speed screw until its not touching the linkage, make sure of the above, then turn idle screw in until it just touches plus about a 1/4 turn and try it again. Good luck.
BOOM. fixed it...you guessed it nook...the linkage was just catching and the throttle was stuck open a little bit. I knew if I went and started a thread it'd be something simple i could have seen anyways. Thanks for all the help. I've read all about your trucks...and i am damn impressed...that's what my dolphin looks like in my dreams
Yeah, Nook is pretty much the man on this forum when it comes to diagnosing old Toyota stuff. I wouldn't doubt he's had that problem before. Basically, if old toyota pickups had a Dalai Lama, He would be it.
