Ok so last night i was driving back from sac to my place in davis and on the freeway randomly my truck started making a weird and loud vibrating/pop noise I thought it was just the road but i decided to pullover anyways I couldnt figure out what was wrong I could sworn a wheel bearing exploded or something so right before i was about to give up and call a tow truck i noticed three of the lugnuts were very very loose on my front left rim I swear i was like omfg! i got so Effing lucky! anyways basically i could have died but luckily i got lucky Thank you God!

that happened to me on the titan, had wheel locks and everything got a wierd vibe for about 15 miles then wobble wobble and I sheared most of them off.. got a ride home went back in the morning tightened the remaining 2 or 3 lugs and drove 30 miles home.. they all broke off when I took the wheel off... bought a whole new hub bearing wheel stud assembly.
Oahu - haha if i was i dont remember im usually a really nice guy V8 - dude that sucks i would have hated to do that cuz i dont have anywhere to work on my truck so id have to pay someone to do it :/ Nam - honestly i dont even remember what they torqued em at, i got new rims recently and the tire shop installed em.
i remember when that happened in my friends integra on the way to class, apparently some ******* was loosening lugnuts on nice cars at school. he had really nice ssr type c's and rays lugnuts. we where only able to find on of the lugnuts so i kept it and turned it into a keychain as a reminder/conversation starter/good luck charm lol
The lug nut torque i set my wheels at is impact gun highest torque setting! My damn UTI skool makes us torque wheels to "Manufacture Specs" Fk that! Impact gun is the way to go! but has to have real good torque!
yea ok. good luck with that. I worked in a shop the last 2.5 years and had enough nuts torque off from other people overtightening then or using anti-seize, then they snap when I use a torque wrench before it clicks. At least I developed a feel for them stretching so I can tell customers they're f****d before I break them resulting in the customers paying rather than the shop/me. If I'm feeling lazy, impact on LOWEST, p******t setting, then torque wrench. If I don't have air, hand-tighten or <12" ratchet or speed wrench then torque wrench. but always torque wrench.
Yea ive come to realize that as soon as theyre tight give em another half turn n ur good. Go back n check em in a couple days and retighten as needed.. I broke off like 12 from my first car cuz I would always overtighten
I have put on wheels on my cars / trucks for decades, and I have never had a lug nut fall off. I've never torqued them specifically. I tighten the up hand tight to where the wheel is flush, then I do the tightening pattern (cross the hub each time) until they are tight with my 18" ratchet. As long as the bolts / studs are good, and you tighten them down evenly (just like doing a headgasket) they shouldn't come loose unless you have bearing problems or drive over really rough roads a lot. Main thing is, make sure NOT to overtighten them. That just stretches the bolts and they will either seize or break. I know that's not the recommended way to do it, but I've never once had a problem with it. Maybe it's because I've done it for so many years I know about how tight they should be and do them pretty evenly, I don't know. And BTW I did that on my race / drag cars too with no issue. Like I said, just gotta make sure they're done in the pattern and all about even torque.
umm no they arent, when you buy new rims its your responsibility to re toqrue them down because they have to settle in place... whenever I get new rims, I always tighten them as soon as i get home, then at 50, 100, and 500 miles.. yeah FHCK THAT. I hate people who use impacts to do lug nuts, thats for lazy ass people... Ive had so many damn broken lug studs due to over tightening, and stripped lug nuts.. Im constantly buying new locking lugs and they are not cheap... I do that, but I go around a second time alays, or if I have a friend, he does the second round... to make sure im not having a weak day lol
When I took my 1.5" adaptors off, I was anal and cleaned all the threads before any lugs touched the truck. Made everything easier. Placed everything on, hand tighten nuts so its all centered. then torqued in star pattern. Everything feeling equal. Then did it for the wheel next.
lol no im the weak (lazy) one.. I get them as tight as I feel like going and then have someone else finish them lol
