see the final 7 characters at the bottom of the plate? those are the ones! the first 4 identify your f or g (7.5" or 8") then the next two identify your ratio, my case, 30 which tell me i have a 3.78:1 then the next one is a 2 which tells me i have a 2 pinion! and w52 is my tranny....
Same rear end that I have in my truck now. F code, 3.42 gearset, open differential, with 2 spider gears. A G57 transmission. Never seen one, but guessing a run of the mill 5 speed.
What's wrong with your stock F-code axle? They sell gears and lockers for them too... It's been proven to hold up to 233HP...
I get 75% off fedex shipping if you need one shipped to you and can find on near me Ill send it for ya. also my truck has the 8inch.. I think all 4 speeds came with them.
Joey- What do you want it to do? Like have low gears and LSD? Or are you gunna put a big nasty motor in it? And keep in mind either the driveshaft will have to be shortened, or youll need the driveshaft off of a 4speed truck off your generation (and a shortbed {if thats what you have} or a longbed/Xcab) Javi-Its kinda wierd, I think it was 84+ when all 4speeds were 8in. 79-83 could have either. Depending on things like 1 ton or dually. All pre 79's are 8.0's afaik.
yeah I dont know... my truck came with a/c, power steering, 4 speed, and nothing else... also strange thing is the ac compressor I have, ive never seen another one like it.. the pulley have like 4 grooves, not a v belt... it also had a air pump so maybe its a california truck !?!
nothings wrong with it.. its just i have all these 8" thirds and no mullah for gears.. ill see if i cant find one here 1st.. thanks man! its joe..haha i want to kill hondas and nissans n shiett! for now an 8" rear would do good cuz i have 4 options to test n tune.. while i build my 4 link up! then when the times right ill install and slap coilovers
7.5" axles have 27 splines, 8" axles have 30 spline. Also look for V6 2wd trucks were you are. They are 8" axles 5 lug. James
carrier as in 3rd member?? if so yes i know bout that... but my q is can you get a 4x housing and swap 7.5" axleshafts to retain the 5lug?? or are the spline counts different??
I think the 4wd has more splines. Use the 8" shafts so it will be stronger and buy adapters to go from 6 lug to 5 lug. Or run the 6 lug and trip everyone out.
damn... haha id run 6lug but no rims for it! i have like 3 sets all 5 lug, n ill be damned if i run the set of nissan stocks i have laying round! thanks for the info guys!
if you flip a rear it WILL run reverse! you could use reverse cut gears... doesn't seem worth the trouble get a explorer rear... I did (*
You guys are making this more complicated than it has to be. I did this in my truck so I have experiance. If you have the 4 speed truck that came with the 8" all you need is the carrier housing or 3rd member from a 4x4, and a new gear set, everything from your 2wd carrier will fit into the 4x4 housing except for the gears. 4speeds came with 3.07 gears. this is why the 2wd carrier housing gets thrown away, it has an offset pinion because off the super large pinion gear. The 2wd 8" has 30 spline axles and is identical to the 4x4 other than on a 4x4, "1" the 8" housing has the spring perches on the top, "2" the carrier housing is different, "3" the axles have a larger flange and are drilled to the 6 lug pattern. So as simple as it is, if you want to put the 8" in your 5speed and retain the same gear ratio you need the 2wd 8", a 4x4 carrier housing, a new gear set, and a new install bearing kit. Or just throw it in and have some serious highway speed. Hope this answered all of your questions.
I'm looking for a 8" 2wd housing and axles. I have a 4.30 Electric Locking TRD center chunk I want to drop in. But it would be nice to have the 3.07 gears with the v8. I'm screaming on the interstate right now. Thanks for the info, I know right where a v6 2wd is hanging out. -Ryan
