fuggin hate the way the site is. been a hater since day one. but its the only site out there. im only gonna offer one piece of evidence on this sites fail... look at the years the first two gens are separated. pre- 75 and 76-83. first off the 75 year truck is a whole different animal then a 74/73, and a completely different truck from anything older. then in 79 the WHOLE TRUCK changed, 4wd was introduced as well as torsion bars. this shows the person that set it up doesnt know or care about older trucks, but nobody notices, its only the super dork that notices. problem is.... this is the biggest, best advertised, #1 result on google. and there really isnt anything else out there dedicated to 2wd toyota trucks start a new site thats well orgainized without a billion different catagorys and mods that show up every once in a while, and ill post there.
Yea I never got why it was seperated 76-83 either... yes there are similarities but the body styles and suspension are totally different. But yea this is the only game in town. I run (or used to when it wasn't a ghost town) PDXRocks.com and set up the board there in 2004 with the sole purpose of making a Portland area music board and site. Unfortuantely, the members pretty much scared off new members by badgering and belittling them, so it got a bad rep. For some reason the old timers in the scene there think they know better about stuff, so they slam anyone who posts and opinion. Bad thing is it was supposed to bring people together, and we did shows, meetings, band show swaps... until that kind of stuff took over. We had a good 2 year run when things were going well, then it died. We got slammed with spammers. Two of the four founders bailed. then the last two (myself and the guy who did the website scripting) finally stopped being mods. So now it's a ghost town. Too bad, because it could have been great. This site isn't bad, I've been to much less organized places (www.powerslave.com - was a founding member and it went to hell only 3 years later) and really nice sites (www.hybridz.org)... it's all about the people who post. And I don't think we need porn in the site myself - plenty of sites for that and I wanna be able to check the board out without my 2 year old daughter seeing things she shouldn't be seeing yet... LOL!
how hard would it be to create a forum like this but better ?!? its only like 7.50 a year for the website name toyotaminitrucks.com or even toyotaminis.org but is there any other additional fees to doing this ? if its something that can be done in free time within a few weeks to months and isnt an expensive up keep, im down to start a new site...
Domain Name: TOYOTAMINIS.COM Registrar: GODADDY.COM, INC. Whois Server: whois.godaddy.com Referral URL: http://registrar.godaddy.com Name Server: NS1.THEPLANET.COM Name Server: NS2.THEPLANET.COM Status: clientDeleteProhibited Status: clientRenewProhibited Status: clientTransferProhibited Status: clientUpdateProhibited Updated Date: 16-dec-2009 Creation Date: 16-feb-2006 Expiration Date: 16-feb-2011 i guess search through go daddy and see if you can find the contact of who owns the site. if you own a site, any site , you are supposed to have a contact. the site they registered with should have that info.
there are two things to pay for - the domain name and the webspace. The domain is chump change. The space is what kills ya. I have a few spaces that I got in on a long time ago and I was grandfathered in for free, but it would normally cost $30-40 a month to keep. I have 750mb per site. that's a LOT of space, a message board db can get big but usually not much more than 500mb. Depends on pruning and how much activity. this board doesn't have much more traffic than PDXRocks used to have. So basically we're talking about $400 minimum a year to set up one of these boards and maintain a year. And hopefully you can get people to donate to help you, or else whoever sets it up gets to pony up. then you have to read all the posts and moderate it and enforce the rules. let's just say you get a rep for being a hardass and sometimes are quick to react after being pushed to the limit constantly from policing people's actions.
also if i you have ads on the site, and if there is enough traffic you can generate revenue from the ads. if this forum could be purchased, i know for sure it could be turned around for the better. and im sure there are few regulars on here that a trustworthy enough to be moderators
i agree. but like everyone else said theres not much else out there. somebody straightin this place out.... most of the tech section=fail... +1 for mods
bet this site cost's less then $60 a year to operate. my dot com through godaddy was only like $60 to purchase, and the hosting the forum is like $40 a year if that. but i have no adds, no advertising and no traffic... this site is a business, and i bet it makes money
it used to be everyone here liked that there were no moderators, but back then there weren't spammers and rude comments. and jeff already sold his other site (customtacos.com) over a year ago. i'd imagine you'd have to pay a mint to get ownership of this one.
also a few of us tried to start another toyota truck forum well over a year ago. but with only a few people making the switch over it failed horribly. there is a ton of good info on this site, it's just buried within.. lol
I agree, this place could use some re organization, mainly content wise. Tech section could be a " make a write up with pics, send it to us- if it's right and easy to follow, it goes up and is locked so it's read only" kinda place. Minimum post count for selling in the classifieds, nothing huge, like maybe 10-20 posts, enough to get a feel for someone. Sell ad space to companies RELATED to toyota trucks ( slacker comes to mind if he's game). IDK just throwing **** out there! Maybe do paid memberships for like 5 bucks a year and get a free sticker with the URL for your truck....that way the trucks get noticed and website name gets out there while providing paid members special sections to post in that are unmoderated. Like I said IDK, just throwing things out there!
I agree with project. Many TV stations run that way being paid by companies for advertising . So yah if there would be a way to round up numerous vendors maybe even a few bigger companies that would be willing to pay for there ad bars and links and such however business is business and a lot of these places would bail if they didnt see generated sales from the site being advertised on. If any of you have the time go check out roadsterdrift.com this forum is a very well oiled machine, rules are set in stone and if you dont follow them the MOD gives you 2 warnings before pulling your account and you cant get another one unless you use a random name and address from the phone book. They dont tolerate garbage like spam posting, petty fights and name calling however there is a lot of room for argument sake I know alot of it seems fine line but its just like normal life there is only so far you can go before the police step in other then that you can play all day no fuss. I havent been on this forum for long but it does seem to be a bit wavy in a few areas but all it takes is a few people who want to make it right however these people also need to be about the forum and why it exists not their own interests Ive seen forums like that as well were the moderators think their opinion is god and everyone else is crap those places go down really quick.
Just putting my 2 cents in, I agree too that this site does need some cleaning up. I personally wouldn't mind a small yearly fee to be a member and I like the idea of getting some website decals. I know some people who run www.silvermustangs.com I can talk to them and see if I can get some idea's maybe help us all out.
before everyone goes running around, why dont we see who owns the site and see if its even for sale or whatnot. the guy could just be sitting on it and doesnt wanna give it up.
Thats fine then why not simply make mod or 2 of guys that post all the time. Then they can clean up some of the spam and such
