I'm looking to do a swap in my 85 from the 22r I just don't know what to put in. What's the best way to go on low cost, more power and ease on install? I'm new to the mini world. I've always had the muscle cars and sbc is always my first choice but I need milage not mass torque. Any ideas? C'mon guys...help a guy out would ya?
you should know better than that. Gears, gears, gears! A sbc making a boatload of torque will turn a tall set gears pretty easy! I vote for a sbc, or LSx (Ls wouldn't weigh too much more than a 22r) a MANUAL trans (so YOU control your mileage better), t56 maybe? if the shifter wouldn't be too far back in the cab. a ford rear with 3.08's or 3.27's or even 3.55's if your over drive gear (5th or 6th) is tall enough. They have the same bolt pattern as yotas, some come with disc brakes, and they're reasonably cheap to narrow (some of them are a tad too wide) If an Ls1 with a cam and bolt-ons on 4.10 gears (in a 3200Lb car) can manage to get 24-26mpg on the highway, I see no reason why you can't get 30+ out of one on taller gears and less weight.
orrrr......buy a vet ! ....jk.....i like the ford 302 in the yotas...iv seen some power for cheap....we built a 302 for an explorer and the total cost on it was around 2gs...paid $50 for the block, got it redid for $150, found a set of mustang foxbody HO heads for $350...t5 tranny for $200...headers for $100....good carb around $350....so on and on....it was pretty cheap and still put out loads of hp and tq for the small add ons....im sure you could get away with 1g for a pretty peppy motor and tranny, 302 of course.... cvys sbc are pretty cheap to find...but no point in buying a used one that needs rebuild....iv never done anything with the cvys..so i cant tell u much...ever need good HEAD get ahold of steves head shed in NC...he also build motors and is prob the best of the South....hope that helps with any ideas...
Also, if your looking to go ford, here's a budget setup that works pretty well. 302 block, possibly bored out to 306" and your choice of cam (I'd do alteast an FRPP b303) explorer heads and intake (also known as GT40P, flows better than '93 cobra parts) headers, whatever fits This should be good for healthy street engine, nothing to radical, nothing too tame.

Im going 302, Considering its a bit narrower and shorter than a 350. Uber cheap to build, should be just under 300 lumping horses. T5 trans is small and light. 96 Explorer heads. GT40 irons (angle plug) milled .030. I have 200 bucks in em complete. 306 cubic inch X-303 roller cam Air gap RPM intake Roller SVO rockers No carb yet. Prolly a 650 Holley DP. I said AT LEAST a b cam. The X cam is obviously preferable amongst us REAL men! I was just trying to advise a good reliable setup even a 16 yr old kid could drive and not do too much damage with.
Oh I'm no stranger to power...My first mucsle was a 79 Malibu 350 block .30 Kieth Black flat top pistons and ratating assy, 292 cam w/ .510 lift @ half inch. 2.02 Vette heads ported polished with all the goody's r.p.m air gap intake with performer 600 cfm carb. Mad a little over 375 hp and killed 430 lb ft. Theres no such thing as too much power. I just drive 75 miles a day and need more milage than power. I'm just tired of getting beat by stupid stuff like a kia the other day and a civic twice and so on...the damn kia was the last straw...I need just a bit more without goin over board. Just want a good 4 banger maybe a v6. I have a t3/t4 turbo just sitting in the garage I just didn't see fit to put it on a stock 200k 22r. I need my truck to run not blow up.
Ok guys, I got a lead on a 91 3.0l ford motor from a ranger with all the wiring and ecm that's got 125k on it for 50 bucks...what do ya spose a fella would have to do to mate that to my stock tranny? would this work or would I be looking to buy a ford 5 speed to go with it? then a drive shaft and all that jazz...I'm trying to do the easiest swap I can as I'm limited on space and can't have the truck down for more than a few days...hit me up if you've done or know of this swap. if your just looking to beat a kia, then just start running 93 octane gas. That should do it. Seriously, If your gonna swap, and only have a few days to do it. stick to a KNOWN swap that TONS of people have done.....i.e. SBC, SBF, 1 or 2jz, 5 or 7mge...something along those lines. Your gonna want and need support during the process and it's gonna be easier to come by if your doing a "normal" swap. Don't get me wrong, it'd be a fun project to do something off the wall that never been done before, like a twin turbo wankle engine......or an S&S v-twin for each back tire......but that's considered "trail blazing" and not something you'd want to dive into head first, only having 3 days to complete. Just my $.02
a twin turbo wankel engine would be sick nonetheless, but i think doing timing chains on a 22RE is easier than tearing a whole rotary engine just to get to the apex seals and more. S&S V-twin for each rear tire.. LOL THAT'd BE CRAZY Anyway, Like what he said, stick to something doable and where you can get help for. and i'm wondering.. how much mpg are you even getting with your truck? if you're out racing kia's and civics, you're burnin up gas.
Thanks guys, as far as gas milage goes, I still get between 25 and 30 mpg. I drive mostly on the freeway with maybe 3 or 4 miles of in town driving everyday as I work about 35 miles from work and probly 95% of that is on the freeway.
