I ran into a big problem today changing my water pump. I had to slip off the timing belt to do this. Thinking it wouldn't be that big of a deal if I just put it on as tight as I could get it around the sprockets I slipped it off. Well after getting everything bolted back up the truck won't fire so, you guessed it, the timing is off. My question is what's the easiest way to get this engine at TDC and how do I know I'm there on the compression stroke? Once there can I just turn the cams to the alignment marks or is there the possibility that I could be out with these 180 degrees? Am I going to have to pull the valve covers to be sure the cam is in the right position? I'm going through my Haynes manual but am having no luck getting the complete steps.
i think valve covers is your best shot. and i think you meant 3VZ-E lol. unless we're working on a Camry haha
Wow I can't believe anyone else around here doesn't have any input. Guess I'll have to figure it out myself.
stick a rag in the spark plug hole on the #1 cylinder. Crank it til u hear it pop out. In short clicks tho
Ya but I figured it out so what's that say about you? Thx for the help Nam and Jetas. Actually that would probably work well Jetas. Anyway, I put the crank at TDC and then lined up the cam that runs the distributor so it was pointing to #1 and then lined up the other cam. Put it back together and was off by one cog on the second cam because of slop in the belt. Readjusted and now everything is fine. Thx.
