Hi All, Well it happened to me last week, I was relieved of my Catalytic converter and what a hassle. I was wondering what (if anything) folks here have done to reduce the probability of losing another one? I did a search online and see all kinds of ideas, but short of buying a CatClamp for $150....any ideas here? Thanks in advance, Larry
damn thats no good. happened to a friend of mine on his 4x4 taco and his was welded on! they used a tubing cutter to silently remove it..
thats what i do.... if your cat what stolen thats a sign that your truck is to high... if i were you i wouldnt run a cat... unless you are one of the unfortunate bastards that have emissions testing..
I am one of those unfortunate bastards, here in California we are plagued by emissions testing. I looked for a "test pipe" that I could put in for a while, but after an exhaustive search, I have concluded that all I could do was have one made.....that sux! My truck is stock height, so I can't see lowering it. I read that grinding the bolt heads so there is no flats could work, but when the crooks stole it, their "tool" was locked onto one bolt so they left it, and they used a bolt extractor on it, so that wouldn't work. I am going to weld the nut to the bolts and the mounting plate, but that won't keep it from being cut off with a sawzall. I am thinking of adding a proximity sensor for the underside to my alarm system though. Then from what I read, the crooks aren't interested in aftermarket cats anyhow and if they see one they move on......supposedly not enough of the "precious" metals in them to make it worth their while and the places that "fence" them aren't interested.
That's too bad. My folks at California they are experiencing that problem too. Some of their car parts are getting stolen from time to time. And yes, catless cars are not tolerated.
I can't believe losers actually go thrugh the trouble of stealing these. Or that places will actually give $ for the guts knowing the tweekers that brought them in most likely stole it. I've seen the inside and it just doesn't look to be worth the hassle, or risk. btw...I've made a few test pipes in the past year or 2. This one pictured was disguised to look like a cat on a super charged V6. I opened up the cat, removed the guts (shown) & welded the cat body to the test pipe. btw, I don't think there's much you can do, they'll just cut through the pipe before and after it.
Ya here in Cali it was a big thing that ppl were stealing stock Toyota cats an getting like $100 a pop for each one
hell, 100 a pop is on the low side. When I replace a cat at work i save it and give it to the scrapper that comes around. he give me 100 so he has to atleast be getting 200 for it... ive heard of people stealing lifted chevy cats because there is 4 of em, and 4 cuts later you have the 4 cats and 4 02's that you can sell....i think all thieves should die...or get their hands chopped off like in some countries.
aint that the truth. slap on the wrist few days in gov't hotel doesn't stop any of them. since you guys get such good prices, I'm gonna start sending cats from my scrapped cars to you guys since you get so much. up here in non-emissions country it's more like $40ea for original cats if even. Can you guys run a bolt-in test pipe and change it out for testing or do you have checks they don't warn you about?
re : Catalytic Converters My mom destroyed the catco axleback, Does anyone know if the catco converter could bolt on as well.
Exactly what I do on most my rigs is run straight pipe or test with stock bolt plates then come emmissions time bolt cat stock exhaust back on. Ive had my gutted pipe stolen so lol to them
