im assuming the frame is some sort of alloy. what is the major alloy? or is it just plain steel? I see a lot of people welding their frames but no mention of preheat/post heat or anything to protect the properties of the frame.

stock frames are tinfoil...just crap junk metal...people really dont pre or post heat cause its not cast...they just try to not heatwarp it.

i would assume it's just some stamped mild steel frames with no heat treating. the entire length of the frame has welds on top and bottom where the inner and outer material is joined.

what ever it is i wouldn't worry too much, it's just a small pick up frame. lol

I did think of pre/post heat and heat treating and stuff before I started to weld on my frame. But I didn't see anyone else talking about that on TM so I was not concerned.
I am not sure what kind of metal it is but I always hear that it is "scrap" and "junk" metal.
It seems to be easy to weld on, but as for strenght I still cannot say. Only one way to find out. Drop the frame on the ground! HARD!

well, they are an alloy of iron and some other stuff which results in the metal known as steel. it's not pure iron, that's a little soft per strength and weight for frames. just not aluminum alloy. only cars I know of with aluminum alloy frames are high end ones like 'vettes and some of the high end european stuff. never heard of a production truck with an aluminum frame.

when i used to work heavy equipment we used pre and post heat, as well as following inter pass temps since the frames were heat treated alloy steel.

but i haven't heard of any problems from welding on a toy frame, other then people doing poor wedling that caused cracking ect.

No offense intended. It's not just for your benefit. there are an alarming number of people that equate alloy with aluminum and have no idea.
