I have no idea why but when I shift to reverse it clanks really loud like if I wasnt holding the clutch... and some times it wont shift into reverse... can anyone help with this

 

try putting it into 2nd before 1st or reverse. helps the syncros line up. could also be you need to flush your clutch fluid.

 

mine does the same, its like it is grinding.. it does not matter if I shift it into another gear to line it up first it does it (not everytime though) also sometimes it wont go in at all and i have to leave it like halfway let the clutch out a little bit and then it goes in smooth.. and probably supposed to do this but if im rolling backwards at all it wont go in without grinding ?

 

How does your shifter seat look?

Replaced mine with one from Marlin Crawler and the problem went away.

. . . I shift into 2nd then 1st then over to reverse in my 75' then it slides right it with no problem. If I dont do this I hear the clunk that they are talking bout. Overall, kinda lika habit and works simply great.

 

Nuetral it

Mine is due for a new clutch itself, but what works for me is put your Hilux back in nuetral and release the clutch and try again. Even after I replaced my clutch master cylinder it did that, but apparently I got another faulty one, so guess that means more cash to spend when I get it.

 

What it is!

There is nothing wrong with it...
Because reverse is done with an actual moving gear (and no synchro's), the truck and the intermediate shaft must both be stopped for the gear teeth to match up. This is most commonly a problem if a person wants to go into reverse after the truck has been idling in neutral. If one just pushes down the clutch pedal and shifts into reverse, it will grind/clank.

One approach is to simply wait a couple of seconds after pushing down the clutch pedal so that the intermediate shaft can come to a halt before shifting into reverse. To do it faster, you can push down the clutch, shift briefly into one of the forward gears (using its synchro to slow down the intermediate shaft) and then shift instantly into reverse.

I know what the problem is and the fix. I've told me story about how my truck was sitting in a field for about a year. Then when I got it started having problems getting in first and reverse. So like alot of people on here thought ok maybe the clutch has shyt the bed. so I buy a new clutch go to put it in and low and behold what do I find one of the clips that hold the bearing to the fork had came off. Which I later found out that my uncle had a clutch put in and the guy puttimg it in lost a clip. The symptom is that the bearing doesnt slide back like its suppose to and makes it hard to get into gear. now I'm not 100% posititve that this is everybodies problem but it wouldnt hurt to look next time your in there. But if it is the clips you can get them from your local toyota dealer for 1.75 a peice
