Does anyone know of any fitment issues if one was to drop one of these into a 73? There is one for sale locally for $600. Is that a decent price? What's the HP rating on these? What did they come in?
wowsers! that looks like a tall engine with the intake sticking up as high as it does... might have some steering linkage issues.
Toyota Altezza's in Japan (Lexus IS300 equivalent) were produced with a 2liter 3s-ge BEAMS motor with a 5/6spd I believe. The other option was an outdated 2liter 6cylinder or the 3liter 2jz-ge. So yes, the 3s-ge comes in rwd. The 3s-gte is fwd. You can try putting gte parts on the ge. Or just gte to rwd transmission. Very good motor, it'd be a motor I'd use.
Only limitation may be trying to find the actual transmission and bellhousing itself. Other than that, you'll be on a roll
If you want to do it look at Oz and NZ based forums, this conversion has been done a number of times to various vehicles. I would start witth www.toymods.net, the tech section is public but you need to sign up to see the members rides areas where there are some full builds very well documented. Callum
You want to check on the sump and pickup though, the 4WD motors are setup to be mounted on an angle that is very different from the RWD 3S-GE BEAMS motor. Callum
What do I find those in? Just got a reply and the the motor came out of a 91 MR2 RWD. Think it can be made to work or is the tranny issue gonna kill me?
The tranny issue is just a matter of getting the right gearbox or bellhousing. The Altezza is a jap spec IS200 running the 3S-GE instead of the 1G-FE, model is SXE10. You will probably need to talk to an importer to get one in the US, from memory the box is a J160(???) 6 speed but has an integral bellhousing so you have to get the specific 3S box. The other option is importing an early S series RWD bellhousing from NZ or Oz which will bolt up to the W series alloy boxes, there are planty of details on the work needed on Toymods but basically you need a wider spigot bearing or to shave the front of the bellhousing. There is also a little messing around with the starter motor. Or if you have the fabrication skills get a busted 3S box and cut the bellhousing off, then mate it up to the back half of any suitable RWD bellhousing. Just make sure it is straight. Callum
Did a quick bit of googling and came up with this - As said above though the bellhousing is integral so you have to get the 3S Altezza one. Callum
