pistons were like $65. full bottom end kit with oil pump, timing chain, pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets was $300 shipped from enginebuilder.

alright. got my pistons in the block, rods torqued down, prepared my timing cover with the water pump and oil pump on, and got my timing chain assembly on minus the chain being in. the front cover is just sitting there with a few bolts in snug to test clearance. i have had to figure out the proper length bolt for each bolt since everything was loose when i got it. and ive been wire brushing every bolt to clean them up before i use them. ill spray a final coat of silver paint before i install the motor. well, maybe. depends how dirty i end up getting it. its going pretty smooth though.

if anything looks wrong or out of place, please speak up. this is the first toyota motor ive built, and im just going by the book i have. thanks.

    on to the photos:

    mmm...shiney pistons
    [IMG]

i made special care to make sure the rings were oriented properly, pistons and rods aiming the proper way, and that the bearings were all tang to tang (tabs that prevent spinning)

new oil pump and seal. cleaned up good water pump.

oil filter adapter to run a cooler up front. may or may not use. for sale if someone else needs it.

rods at 40/lbs and mains at 80/lbs. its what my book says.

this stuff is great. we use it on all our motor builds. its super thick and sticky (just like good smoke :D) and it can be left in if you dont do an oil change after initial break-in. also helps old motors seal a bit tighter. i suggest it to everyone. cheaper than lucas oil too. haha.

this is the book everyone with a 78 and back truck should own. still in print. dont settle for inferior chilton books. it covers the 8r, 18r, and 20r motors, as well as all the common suspension and maintenance stuff they always do. doesnt specifically cover stouts, but might have some usable info in there as well. i have tons of haynes books. i love them. they seem to specify bodystyle ranges properly. such as my 82-86 supra book. great one there for learning about the M series motor i want to use. anyways...buy this :D

haha. i think with my intake and gearing, i might have ya. lol. but yeah, i wanna get it all put in. hopefully this weekend.

i have a 20r head, all rebuilt last summer. slightly larger valves. new guides and seals. its not ported, but if i have to take it apart for a cam upgrade ill do it then. but im already looking into building a supra motor for the truck. lol.

If you get a Supra motor, you'll have to give me the chance to buy back this beast you are putting together!

i think it will be close since we both have the 410s in the rear but i do have more compression than you and my head has been port matched with my intake i think the biggest difference is that you have a w55 and i got the 58 but only time will tell:D

yeah. i have a shorter 1st. you have a taller 5th. but you havent jetted your carb or ported the intake. so yeah it should be a close match.

annnd i got an oil pan today so i can reduce the downtime of me doing the motor swap by already having a clean pan installed. but damn was it ever a bitch to pull underneath the truck. there was room to work, but not room to pry it loose. finally got it. atleast i had the rear seat from a bmw to lay down on underneath :D

so on to the motor, basically ready to go.

im still debating doing a final coat of paint. it would make all the bolts and freeze plugs and sealant edges hidden. but it also removes some detail and contrast they provide. and i think ill just leave the new oil pan black.

yeah that oil cooler adapter will fit a toyota truck, and should still leave space to run the tall filter (PH8A). it needs a new o-ring seal but the parts store should have that.

you would still need to run lines, and an actual oil cooler in front of the radiator. this just allows you to get the oil out of the motor to cool it.

yea, i know that you need the rest of that crap... lol... might salvage one from the JY.... buy some lines from the auto parts store... and that o-ring could probably be used from an old oil filter xD

and finnnally, pull a part had a cherokee with the rims ive wanted to test fit for ages at the same time as a hilux. ignore the tires, i think they would tuck with about a 205/50/15 or similar sized tire. they are actually bare aluminum with grey inner spoke edges. 15x7"ish.

rear might need a bit of a fender roll, but im not against that. youve all seen the front fenders haha

yeah. that was my plan for how to install it. it came on the motor. you could use an oil filters normal seal and some rtv to put it on too. just make sure whatever cooler you run is for engine oil not trans fluid. the thinner trans fluid lets them run smaller passages. it can limit oil pump flow through the motor if you run one thats for an auto trans.

    $20 + s/h

    ooook... good info to know...
$20, not bad... send it using that USPS Flat Rate mailing boxes... "If it Fits, It Ships, For a Low, Flat Rate" lol... it would be the cheapest bet of shipping method... some guy sent me a repair kit for a 12" woofer and the box was like 14" x 14" by 4" and I think shipping was like $6-$9.. so yeah.. let me get me some money and i'll get at you very soon :D

btw, wtf is rtv? lol... like silicone or somethin? cool...

yes. its a gasket sealer. comes in a few types. its at the parts store. i wouldnt build a motor without it. you can see the orange on the seams on my motor im building. i put a skim coat on both sides of the paper gasket to assure that its sealed. just dont overdo it.
