I originally bought my yota for the ease of loading my gixxer in the back. I lowered it and it was way easier than putting it in my 4x4. Still wanting to go lower (well a lot lower), I decided that bags are in the near future. Problem is that bagged trucks are either hacked in the middle of the bed or the floor is raised thus defeating the original purpose. I had this idea of making an independent rear suspension from an Escape all wheel drive so that the pumkin is mounted and the axles are much smaller than the originals.
an escape would probably work. so would a supra if you narrowed the setup. some rx7s also had a good setup ive heard. or a 300zx. possibly a miata if you redrilled the hubs. i know what you mean about this though. my 78 is as low as i can go without atleast a small bubble in the middle. but its alot narrower than the 89-95s, so it would be even tougher to find something.
Has anyone thought of a 240? I've been under a few of my buddies and even rebuilt the diff in one, and it seems that it would work just as well. On second thought, what has the same bolt pattern?
well, width is harder to fight than redrillign hubs. id find something that would take to bags well and has a usable width. its alot cheaper to redrill than get custom/modified shafts, and probably bring the arms in narrower.
Lexus IRS - 5x114.3 Supra IRS - 5x114.3 240SX IRS - 5x114.3 (for the five lugs, they had early 4 lugs...) Ford Escape IRS - 5x114.3 Z/ G IRS - 5x114.3 S2000 IRS - 5x114.3 these are some of the few i could think of.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will be hitting up the junkyards today with a measuring tape. Is there a link to a pic of Bernie's setup?
This is a great example of IRS in a Toyota Mini. http://www.minitruckinweb.com/features/0303mt_toyota_pickup/index.html
RIP Garage in atlanta did a s13 rear irs swap on a datsun 610 with an sr20 and that thing is naaaaasty. That rear would probably work nice on a toyota. You'd have to use 300zx brakes to have 5 lug though.
thats josh freemans truck. badass yota. IRS, paint had the tail lights inside the tribals, accord headlights, heavily modified 2wd bumper, custom grille, ect ect. he did all the work himself except the seat recovering. its like the epitimy of homebuilt custom. it had a few covers, he eventually repainted it before he sold it. its pretty badass though. its also featured in one of the low life dvds. and it was built back in like 2004 so let that account for a few mods. lol.
the supra needs to be narrowed several inches.. the rx-7 is about right, but doesn't really take well to the big height adjustment, the alignment gets thrown way off. if you don't plan on running a huge wheel than a toy only needs a small notch to run the live axle. and if you ran a forward facing wishbone, keeping the tank in the stock location you could dove tail the bed down to line up with the tailgate. then i'd be like a big ramp.. lol
