Is anyone finding it tough to replace any of the glass on their trucks? Does anyone know if they are still available? I'm guessing the rear window couldn't be too hard, but what about the windshield? I've got a 77'. Would appreciate any feedback.
windshield on mine was done by some auto glass guy. cut the rubber off and used some special metal flat thingys to pry it out. mine was done for $151 installation also on my driveway. that included teh glass. Discount Auto Glass, i think that was the name. the rear window should be easy. some flat heads and stuff like that, and then some rope and windex for some "lubrication" i did my door windows myself, those were pretty simple. I did my rear window myself, went okay!
hey joe, i'd imagine any glass shop could source a window for it. i had a brand new FoMoCo (ford motor company) windshield installed in my 66 mustang. it "cost" (insurance company) $600. seems if the cars are still on the road, somebody has glass for it.
ill ask a few friends. and keep my eyes open. took me forever to find a good shape seal for mine. summer time it goes in and out every day. and let me know on the window and seal as well. with or without a chrome lock strip. even the seal and i could find a used window and cut that seal out to save it.
There's a 78' SR5 at the yards just a couple of miles from me. It has a nice solid rear one-piece window. I can't remember what they go for at the yards. If I remember correctly even the rubber was decent. But I don't know if you'd want to risk having it shipped from Hayward, California. My 77' SR5 windshield has a couple of BB-size nicks and the 78' in the yard has a nice clean windshield ($45). I wasn't quite sure how hard they are to come by, and if at that price I should be jumping all over the one in the yard. If they are THAT readily available and not much more than $45, then I could spend my money on something else for the time being. I did snatch up the steering wheel and visors since the ones my truck had were cracked and less than ideal.
well i never find them in good shape around here. and last time i checked glass was about 90 bucks. they do still make it, but not every company does. so its all old stock or certain companies.
Wow, $90??? In that case, at $45 maybe I should go back for the windshield. I only wish the rubber weatherstrip was in as nice as the glass itself. It didn't look much better than the one I already have, if not, worse.
If I might ask how many yards are there around you? I'm going to have to go look and see what I can find around here
I've replaced the front with new ,around $225, the rear replaced with used $75. Did price all new when paint went on,$3,500!!
i meant in the summer i take the back window out and put it behind my seats. lol. so my old seal ended up getting a bit torn up. and these trucks had 2 different window seals up front. one solid or black roped. the other with a chrome ring that snaps in.
Within ten miles there are 4. Another 20 miles, 3 more. Seven total within reasonable driving distances. Four of those being actual PICK-N-PULL yards, one other a PICK-N-PULL "type" yard, while the other two are smaller privately owned wreckers. There are 2 other PICK-N-PULLS within an hour & a half away if you really want to venture out. I have yet to do this, myself, because I've always been pretty lucky, locally. But I've always been curious what I might find out there, so I may just make the trip in the next couple of days. As for your other question, not quite sure what you were asking. If it's what shipping charges would be, I'm not sure. What I meant by that statement was I feel it might be quite a risk shipping a piece of glass that large - that far. *But I don't mind doing it if you really wanted to.
