I kinda feel like a dumbass asking this, I'm not very knowledgable when it comes to motors and things like this. Is it worth the extra money for the name brand motor oils (i.e. Quaker State, Pennzoil, Castrol, etc.)? Does it really make that much of a difference?

Again, sorry for the newb questions.:D

stay away from penzoil. it has perfin in it and can f up your motor, you'll notice BHG looking milkshake colored oil.

some of the higher end oils can lubricate better, or last longer. but ive never had a problem with the cheap stuff, usually quaker or castrol rebadged "X brand"

The only thing in my opinion that really makes a difference or not is wether it is full synthetic oil. It breaks down slower and does lubricate better. As for brand name... that is completly up to the buyer. I usually get Mobile 1.

just run regular dino oil in a 22re, especially higher miles, synthetic won't hurt but you won't notice much of a difference and may notice new oil leaks form on the motor. Stick with castrol, valvoline......just my 2 cents but I worked at a lube shop for 5 years and changed oil on literally thousands upon thousands of cars.

never run penzoil, use toyota oil filters

Obviously I don't do my own oil changes. I usually get the cheapest oil changes (which most of the time include the no name brand oil), mainly cause I'm on a budget. I'm just trying to think of ways to make my motor last longer, and because its due in about 50 miles or so. But if its worth paying for the name brand oils than I will do so. I do keep up on basic maintance on the truck. Thanks for your opinions guys, and please keep 'em coming.

In my 2jz I run 0w-40w Mobil 1 or Royal Purple, both are expensive but are great lubricating oils that can take the abuse I give it, But this is pumping more power and more parts that give lots of heat and friction which needs a better oil that wont sludge or cook.

For the 22r/ 22re engines I have always trusted either castrol or valvoline. They are still on the cheap side and do well for a conventional oil and dont create problems for any engine or vehicle i have had in the past. I use Napa's NAPA GOLD Oil filters and there Mobil 1 filters and have had great success with those. Dont use FRAM! they are just flat out bad filters and dont filter well at all.

Seriously, I've never had any issues running penzoil. I run pure synthetic in any fresh engine, and in higher mileage engines...penzoil. I've never ever had a problem with it in 15 years worth of driving/working on cars.

Valvoline usually leaves a sludge after extended use, I've noticed.
Quaker state is what my grandpa uses, he's had no problems out of it.
I switched my cutlass over to synthetic for 1 cycle. I actually noticed several things. The car felt smoother, it actually got better gas mileage, and it also developed 2 new leaks. Apparently, having all of your oil's molecules the same size is only good if your using it in a brand new build...

Uh change your own oil, if you are on a budget it is cheaper to do it yourself. Plus lube shops (even the dealer) make mistakes.....often. You don't want something bad to happen to your truck. Use a quality oil and a toyota filter (better quality and cheaper than a napa filter). You can get rid of the used oil/filter at most parts stores for free. A do it yourself oil change will only run you around $15/

Bosch filters also suck.....stick with toyota oil filters. Pennzoil platinum is a different oil than their conventional stuff. It is fine, but also you would be just as well off with a conventional quality oil. (btw platinum is just very refined conventional oil as are most so called "synthetics" a true synthetic is man made.

ask most mechanics about opening up a motor that has used pennzoil vs. a motor with castrol. Pennzoil causes sludge, most oil change places (even the dealer) use it because it's a cheap ass oil but people think it is good because they advertise alot.

Bottom line on oil guys.......use Castrol (any type) and a toyota filter and your motor will not fail from lubrication/sludge buildup.

So who knows what engine sludge actually causes?????? trivia question

If you want cheap use Mobil "clean 5000"... Its 11.00 bucks a gallon at wally world! I use it and a "wix" brand oil filter... When I have extra money to spend I use Shell Rotella...

I only pay $15 (regular price) at the lube shop I go to. I go there partially cause a fellow minitrucker works there.

"Engine sludge is the thick, dark substance that can build up and clog the oil passages within an engine. Sludge build-up can lead to reduced gas mileage, decreased engine performance and, in some cases, engine seizure. Once sludge builds up in an engine, it is difficult, if not impossible, to remove! "

oddly enough, this was quoted from here http://www.castrol.com/castrol/genericarticle.do?categoryId=82915464&contentId=7018508
