Ok guys. my truck is the 1989 standard cab 2wd model and I cant find any place that sells rear end diffs, axles, spools etc.. How much power can I put through this rear end before she blows sky high? If I can build the rear end to hold 600whp and launch with slicks, then ill keep it. let me know guys. Thanks
for that, your best bet is probably going to be running a larger rear end. a ford 8.8 or 9" or a dodge 8-3/4 or 9-1/4 would be the best options. theyd need to be narrowed, but they are common for finding upgrades. and they have your same bolt pattern. and look up randys ring and pinion, call them. im sure they can build you a stronger stock replacement.
Nah i tried them. they have everything but drivetrain parts that im looking for. thanks though, anyone other options?
If you're not planning to go all out like this truck below then 8" stock pretaco axle is fine for around 350hpish. If not then you'll have to upgrade or your rear and axle will go "KABOOOOM"!!! Like this trucks stock rear did. But, then again this is a 7.5" at the time then they upgraded to the 8" pretaco rear. After they broke both rears they finally went with the ford 9" rear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJ1H83Z_k3I
^^^^^ thats me Ill get the ford 8.8 I have seen TurboDave use them, beat them, and never touch the insides. they have been proven to run 7's in the quarter and ill be doing 6k rpm launches with slicks sooo yeah the stocker will hate me if I dont retire it now.
do you have a 8in rear? dont know if it can be built that strong for 8in rear stuff, you can also go after mkIV supra stuff, they can be setup in the truck 3rd easy. i would try talking to these folks: (sorry you'll have to google them yourself im on dial up these days) randy's ring n pinion www.marlincrawler.com bobby long aka bobby longfield aka longfields (chromeoly shafts) with the 8in diff there is tons of support out there, just doesnt say its for a 2wd, guts are always the same. real problem is not many people build the trucks to that much, a serious swap is rare. but supra's have been built there and farther. now i kinda wonder... whats a bigger torque load on a diff? 600hp slicks n sticky track or 300hp 38's, 40:1 and stomping on it in rocks
No. If the truck is a 4 speed they came with 8" rears. I would go with a Toyota 8" or a Ford 9". I prefer the Ford 9". Stronger than any Toy rearend. James
I wouldn't go as far as to say a 9" is stronger than any Toy rearend. A built 9, yes. but not stock. A 8.4" that comes in the non-TRD 4x4 Tacomas and Tundras pre new body style is a stout rear. There is a guy on the west coast somewhere that can cryogenically treat the gears and you can get a limited slip, detroit, lunchbox locker, or spool for it. Lighter than a 9" and the axle shafts are comparable to Dana 60. Downside, only comes in 6 lug and its wide, like 59". But you can get the axles narrowed and redrilled to 5x4.5 easy and use the stock brake set-up. Just have to narrow housing. A ford 8.8 would be a good choice, just make sure you weld the axle tubes. I've never broken one, but between my friends and I we've spun 3 center sections. -Ryan
the guy that cryo treat's stuff is bobby long http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/ not all products are listed give em a call. and yes the 8in rear IS the 1 ton rear end. lil known fact: all solid front axl trucks are rated at 1ton. im still searching for reliable info on the floating dually axl, ive heard that its got a 8in 3rd in it with a floating setup, but never had one or seen one torn apart. it may or may not be stronger then the 8in.
Yes this truck has the almighty 4 speed long ago. had some pretty steep gears for a 4 speed with the 22r. Im not going to go with the ford 9 because of the high cost it takes to buld them. they are tuff but the cost to strength ratio doesnt fit me. So this truck should have the 8" rear if its had 4 speed correct? Probably wont go the route of the tacoma because they are less likely to find with disc brakes and ill need those for sure. this engine/trans combo sure is a lot heavier up front, gotta stop the bad boy after hitting 130mph in the 1/4 mile. Thanks for the heads up on welding the housing, ill do some more research on that and ask my buddy about that. He built and raced mustangs for years and then switched to audis. big change. ....... there always has to be one haha
find the build tag on your truck. it will have your eng, tran, and axl listed on there. for a 8in rear your looking for something like "G202" the G is for 8in if its a F its a 7.5, the following 2 numbers are the code for ratio, the last digit is for open or lsd. secret decoder ring page for diff's http://www.toysport.com/Technical Information/Toyota Differentials Identifications.htm
Not entirely correct. A solid front axle Toy is not rated for 1 ton and I do not know where you got that from. The dually axle IS out of a 1 ton and you can buy a non-dually 2wd and have it a 1 ton without full floating axles. The dually axle is a V6 rear 3rd and so is the non-dually 1 ton. The 4 speed axles use the 4cyl 8" diff. Just because the 4WD uses 8" 3rd member does not mean it is rated for 1 ton. The only "true" 1 ton rearend Toyota ever put in a mini was the full floating dually rear, all the others are just a regular rearend. James
