First off, Hella Thanks to everyone bein so helpful, this forum is a Godsend. OK, second... My truck is sittin up pretty high off of my wheels. Id like to bring her down an inch or two. I will be replacing the shocks as soon as the weather breaks, but while im down there, Id like to adjust the torsion bar to drop it a bit. Would i need shorter shocks? And, assuming the Tors. Bar is set at a stock hieght, how much travel downwards will i be able to get just crankin down the TB? Also, If anyone knows exactly how to adjust the bar, i could use some instruction, the Manual I have isnt much help. Some pics would be awsome if its not too much trouble, or ya got your bitch in the air already. Thanks again Ill throw in a pic so you can see how high the fromt sits, i got 14" Center Lines with Dunlop Rubbers
i got my 79 loosened, with a 185/75/14 the fender comes down like a 1/4" past the tire. that is with about 2 threads still sticking past the locknut. here is how to lower using the torsion 1. spray the torsion bolts with wd-40/pb blaster etc. 2. jack up the truck and support it with jackstand on the frame itself, letting the suspension hang freely of the ground. 3. i recommend a 1/2" impact to do this. go under near the torsions and using the impact bust the first nut (jam nut) loose and take it off. then loosen the second bolt until where you think the desired amount of drop is going to be. try and get both nuts set the same. 4. holding a wrench on the second nut tighten the first nut back up till it jams the two together. 5. then jack it up and pull the stands and you're set. i don't have a formula of how much thread achieves a certain amount of drop. i wanted the full amount so i backed them off all the way. it gave me an easy 4 1/2-5" of drop.
my truck was set to stock height similar to yours, so i would imagine if you loosened them half the showing thread you would achieve half the drop.
You guys are BOSS Ok, so, im actually backing the nut out? Im not even sure where the nut is but asap, ill get under her and find it. My wheels stick out about 1 1/2" from the fender so i cant go too low, which would make the fender land dead on the rubber, riskin a blow out, or bendin the fender.
yeah, cranking the torsions raises it, loosening them lowers the truck. they are right at the back of the tranny. the tranny x-member is also the torsion x-member. my tires are set in so i didn't have a problem.
I've heard that driving around a bit gets them completely set too. Loosening the torsions also makes a softer ride, something alot better than the cranked ones like I've got. Wanting to get it back to OE height, but my alginment's already f***ed up. Sorry to jack it with my truck.
