hey, Truckaction, your truckbed is less usable than a Maveric. To me the thing about a minitruck is that it is not only a sport vehicle, but it is a utility vehicle. When you fill the truckbed with compression systems and suspension systems it detracts from the "truck" aspect of a "minitruck". I've worked years and years of construction and carpentry, and my truck has always been usable through those trades. It may be lowered, and it may have a custom interior, but it ultimately is a usable truck for utility purposes.
Useability and load carrying capacity doesnt determine wether its a minitruck or not. Its the size of the vehicle itself. Park a first gen tacoma next to a 2nd gen, the 2nd is much larger. That to most of us aint a mini truck. We all know bagged trucks can handle a heavy load, and if built right can haul plenty
sirdeuce -- You've owned 300 vehicles? wow. First name basis with everyone at the DMV? lol All I know is that if Toyota actually makes the new Stout unibody truck thing in hybrid flavor, that I'm likely going to buy one and ditch our Prius. Definitely not a minitruck IMO and for sure I wish it was more of an access cab with a 6ft bed, but it's the hybrid aspect and an open bed that's drawing me toward it as basically a Prius with more capabilities. I DD a Prius instead of my trucks pretty much only because we already own it and it gets a consistent mid-40s MPG when driving it like a rental on my long work commute, but I've trashed the interior treating it like a truck after work since the hardware stores are so far away and I just go on my way home instead of getting a truck. Been wanting to take the sawzall to the Prius for years, but wife won't let me and I can't figure out why hahaha Someone just needs to put out a hybrid retrofit kit or something, I'd do that to my 75 in a heartbeat and DD that truck the rest of my life
For the sake of your bank accounts and mental health I'd suggest waiting for at least the second year before buying any new line of automobile. Let them work out some of the kinks first.
The stout renders look decent but knowing toyota the final product will be pretty different then what people want. I was interested in the gr86 before the production model came out. After seeing it in its final form it's hard for me to like it. But looks on a truck can be easy to overlook with function on the mind.
I think the Stout should be offered as just an extra cab at most. That 4 door thing just destroys the concept of a MINI anything. If Toyota wants to turn the "mini" market on it's ear they should go back to the size of the first Tacoma iteration and concentrate on the trucks capabilities. The 4WD version should be designed around suggestions made by off roaders and rock crawlers. Design that puppy to traveerse the Rubicon at least. Hell, JEEP did it. I understand your feelings on the GR86/FRS, I was sooo disappointed with the new VW Beetle and FIAT 500. The engine belongs in the BACK!!!! The thing that made those cars so damn great was the drivetrain layout, not the looks. It's what happens when you put sales people in charge of engineering. Those people would design a smooth round tip screwdriver. Sorry, I've become a bit disillusioned with the car market over the last couple of decades. I'm thinking of getting a lobotomy and a Prius.
Yeah I'm interested in a completely different market then new cars. I'm all about the 25 year imports. After about 2010 less vehicles have interest me much. I really want to see toyota bring back more sports cars. Mr2 or Celica would be good. Can't think of a convertible in thier line up right now.
It's a GT coupe with the 5-speed. It has an 18RG that i never finished installing because of Arnie; swapping engines every two years for smog check stopped sounding like an idea as I grew older. Putting the 20R back in with a smog legal Weber and header. I will keep it lowered, though. Sorry, not interested in trading. It's my first car and I bought it in 1979 wirh plans to keep and modify it forever. My wildest dream was to weld on steel 944 style box flares, or bolt on IMSA style fiberglas flares.
Agreed!! We need a simple 2dr. trucks. Nissan came close with the King Cab frontier tho.. but I'm not that keen on the rest of its looks or performance. Id much rather drive a few oldies but goodie cars then a new ball and chain..hahaha
Do a 20/22R hybrid, or bump it up to a 2.6 with a 94mm crank. Build it right and it'll pass smog and have so much more torque than the 18RG. The 22R isn't a screamer, but build it for low to mid range torque/power and it'll be just as fast. In '88 I had a local machine shop weld and grind a crank off set, to 94mm, put in a set of 6" Chevy rods and custom pistons in an early 22R block, 2.6 liters. Crank was knife edged and the flywheel lightened. 22R valve in a 20R head, ported and matched to a Cannon mani with a 40DFEV weber. Cam was from the now defunct "Toy Store" at their 260/270 grind. Passed smog and ran like a banshee. Smog techs can't tell the difference from a smog legal 32/36 and a 40/40DFEV, they just look for the C.A.R.B. sticker.
LOL Errrmmmm... no. Sorry, but i find the 18RG so interesting that I'm looking for a pre-1976 chassis to stick it in. Possibilities include a 240Z (a project car sitting in my driveway), Vega panel wagon, 1975 Capri, Toyota Carina, Corona, or Celica. And maybe a "revenge" swap: a Mazda RX-3 or 4. Back in the day, everyone was sticking rotaries in everything. I hated seeing all those rotaries...
Thanks for the "recipe". I'll have to consider some of it. Yowza! The Toy Store! What a blast from the past! I used to hang out there alot until TRD and then ToySport opened their shops in Gardena.
