the 22re is a great engine that will last almost forever with good maintance. the 22re stock does not have a lot of power. i read a couple of years ago that it has around 115hp. i have 225K miles on mine. want to put something bigger in the truck, but i want to see it hit 300K without an overhaul.

Head gaskets typically go with age, but the 3VZ is the worst with them (other than the Dodge Neon). My 22RE had blew it's head gasket in 2008 (20 years in the making) and it ran on 3 cylinders. I love the torque of the 22RE, but despise the lack of top-end power. I'd go for the 22R in either fuel injected or carbed any day, but would go for the turbo hands-down. Higher mileage ones do need to get the timing chain replaced, so if a head gasket is bad, get the timing chain done too. (I wish I did, but the mechanic said it looked fine.

Another thing: I'd ditch the auto, manual's more fun, you have more control, the tranny doesn't overheat as easy, and you get more off-the-line torque.

    Manuals win

    but yeah, 22RE wins

or get a 5VZ-FE swapped in place of the V6 you have now, you'll be far happier

    Not just a 5VZ-FE, but a supercharged 5VZ-FE like Slacker's Trekker!:waytogo:

Yeah, getting new head and gaskets is the best way hands down, even if they are not a genuine Toyota ones.
