Would the coil create worse gas mileage? No, why would it?

They are basically the same unit, but with the MSD you need an additional tach adapter. That's what I run. Works great. You shouldn't expect to see better or worse milage or huge HP increases. You should expect a minor increase in throttle response though.

If you are running a stock engine then you will not see much difference in gas mileage + or -. If you are going to make a change, you need to put in a complete system; coil, CD unit and new distributor or recurve your distibutor so that you can really take advantage of a high performance ignition system. You can get better gas mileage, throttle response and over all engine performance. The Crane systems are made by MSD even though the will not tell you that. I run a Crane system with a 285 HP L.C. Engineering stage 5 Pro Off-road stroker engine and I get about 20-21 MPG on the highway (65-75 MPH) going to events. Save your money and buy a complete system, you will be happy with your investment.

A msd coil will produce a hotter spark if you are going to use just the coil you will need a plug wire set that will have less resistance to get the power to the plug. A hotter spark will create a more complete burn, but nobody puts a performance mod on that doesn't put thier foot in it to really see if it changes anything. Your gas mileage is going to vary regardless, gas companies constantly change the amount of ethanol and mtbe with the change of weather patterns, this is regulated by the federal goverment.
