You probably could use your stock pickup shifter if you wanted. While researching I came across a tranny swap for a Tacoma. The guy did quite a bit more work than I intend to do but he also wound up with his factory shifter on the W58 tranny. Look HERE. .
I'm still waiting on a couple of parts but so far I've been able to change the output seal and now I've just finished replacing the input seal. I've done just about all the cleaning I'm going to do before I put this in for now. Have to remove the front bearing retainer to change the input seal Here is the old input seal on the right with the new input seal on the left. New input seal in place on cleaned inside of front bearing retainer. Here is the front bearing retainer replaced with Toyota brand gasket maker. I also painted it silver. I just didn't like the rusted bare metal look. Hopefully this weekend I can get more done.
The stock shifter won't work in the w58. There is a 1/4" difference in the length on the bottom of the handle. You could easily heat up the bottom of the handle and pull the top half off. If you switch it while they're hot they will stick back together well enough.
Interesting. My w58 has yellow/orange glue where the bottom and top are put together. Is that OEM or was it added by the previous owner? Also does it just slide off or is it threaded as well?
My W58 handle had the same glue. The black handles are just vulcanized to the bottom part so a bit of heat takes care of them handily. I don't see why it wouldn't work the same on the w58 handle as well.
That glue removes the harmonics. I found that out when I cut the stock shifter off and threaded the stud and put a beer tap on my shifter. The damn thing whirred like a mofo while driving...quote the raven....never more...
Another question, I'm probably going to change out the throwout bearing but should I replace it with one for the w58 or should I get the one listed for my truck? Or are they the same? I would imagine they are the same. So When I change out my bellhousing I would use the pickup's fork too.
I haven't done a side by side comparison between the 5m vs r series throw out but I can tell you that either r series style will work perfectly. I'm running the 92+/V6 type bearing without issue and I've also ran the standard older type as well. Same with the clutch fork, I've never compared them either I just used the truck parts that I knew matched the bellhousing.
Great work so far cleaning a replacing the seals. Cheaper to do it know and easier then when installed. Also if you need a stock W58 shifter I have one I don't need.
Thanks DaRoach, I will be posting more pics soon. I've gotten further into it and hope to have everything done by the end of the week (especially since I'm working on my off hours). Also I do have a shifter. The W58 came with one.
Ok just got to my first "I'm stuck" point. I've removed all ten bolts on the pickups bellhousing and I cannot get the transmission out. Do I need to remove the starter? Rear transmission mount is off the tranny is sitting on my jack with a tranny holder. But it will not release from engine.
They both do. The upper is a stud the lower is a bolt. They both go through the separator plate bolted to the engine. And yes, the starter needs to be removed.
Yeah, got it out. So there are ten bolts and one nut. I didn't see that sucker until I got the ol' flashlight out and looked in the engine bay. P.S. the guide stud on the other side wasn't any help either. It was sticking. Here she is.
Do yourself a huge favor and rove the shifter base from the w58 before putting it in. That little extra length makes it a biotch with the base on. Also don't forget to trim the shifter hole back about 1" too.
So you mean remove the shifter base and trim the shifter hole back toward the rear of the truck about an inch?
Yes exactly that. If you put the base back in place with a couple bolts and leave the mount off you'll be able to jack it up into the floor and see exactly what needs to be trimmed.
Tranny is in, well most of the way at least. Still gotta tighten bolts and rework the rear mount. Question about the speedo sender. Should I just keep the supra speedo or will that give me the wrong reading? I'm thinking of using my truck's speedo sender with the elbow adapter from the supra for reaching room. Any comments?
The gear from the truck should work with the supra trans. There were a few different inner gears through the years but I think those are the same. I'd just use the truck gear with the supra elbow adapter and run with it.
