I don't really know where to put this thread but this seemed the most appropriate since I "want" it. Down the street from me is a 1973 Hilux in white. Here is what the guy tells me from the phone call: everything original 2.0L 18R engine automatic new tires new interior no rust 120k miles runs perfectly his asking is 4k which I feel is high, but I know next to nothing about this and am researching everything myself p.s. I would probably want to use it as a daily driver so any input would be appreciated. I work on older C3 corvettes (I have a 1980) so I am mechanically competent but I have never worked on anything Japanese. Only American and German.
Yea, that's what I was thinking. Where should I start at for price in your opinion? I haven't driven it yet only seen it in person and talked to the guy on the phone.
Where r u located? CA prices for a clean daily driver, that is smog exempt, can get that high, but it depends on all kinds of "little" things.
This is the cleanest one I can find thats all original. You think if I can get him down to 2.5-3 thats a decent price? Or should I just wait until I find another?
You can get away with 3k on a clean truck. Any higher and its gotta be heavily modded Ive seen em go for over 5k but the truck was pristine
Now I would be using this as a daily driver if I got it. Is there any common maintenance issues, or problems to be aware of?
I will have to disagree with the above statement, First, you can't find them in clean condition. 95% of them need everything replaced. I agree that you can find them for around 2k, but again there a difference between a running beater and a nice clean truck. I'll speak from experience.. You're first thought is damn that seems pricey... Then you end up looking at beaters.. 1500-2500. Then your next move is to buy one. Usually people tend to buy the nicest looking one with minor engine work.. A few months later... you realize most gaskets are leaking.. the bearings are shot, needs brakes.. tires are not so awesome interior needs work.. so on so forth. THEN your next move is to start making some changes and your wallet is wide open.. 50bucks here.. 110 there. A grand later your truck is still not as nice as the 4k one you could have negotiated to 3600 easily. Go for the truck that's nicer already with the higher price tag. Usually the higher priced truck is the guy who sunk a bunch of his own money in it and is trying to cut his loss. I've suffered of this scenario more than once. Plus you're trying to find a daily.. huge difference between a project a a turn key daily. Find everything that the truck need by visually inspecting it, seals, weather strip, interior defects, engine leaks etc etc. It'll give you and idea if it's worth paying the price or moving fwd.
Im basing my comments off of what i see around here. Ive seen some go for ridiculous amounts for the condition they were in. I do agree with you on the open wallet comment. Thats pretty much where im at. Ive dumped a good chunk of change into mine and it still aint running lol.
