Just curious as to what people would do. I'm swappinng the gears in my 4Runner from 4.30 to 4.56. Since the front diff doesn't get the wear that the rear does, I'm considering pulling the diff on my 2wd (3.73) and putting the 4.30 diff in. Then I will install the 4.56 gear in the 3.73 diff. Would anyone bother taking the 2 hours (if that) to do it?

Depending on tire height it could be fine.

    I'm running 4.56's with a w58 and 25 1/2" tall tires. I'm turning 3k @ 60 and 3500 @ 70. Not ideal but it scoots!

The bigger question is why are you wasting your time swapping the 4.30's for 4.56's? You won't notice the gearing difference, been there and done that.

The axles haves a hair over 300k miles on them. The rear end was very noisy. When I pulled it, the gear teeth had serious wear on them, some starting to chip. I have to replace the gearset anyway, so figured I might as well drop the ratio. My 4Runner has 31" tires on it, just wanted a little more motivation when off road. I have talked with several people who are happy with the 4.56 in their 4WD Toyotas.
I won't waste my time swapping the 4.30 diff into my 2WD pickup. I like the fuel mileage with the 3.73.
