A 1990 Toyota pickup came into the shop today and I noticed that it had stainless windshield trim and a windshield that looked like it was urethaned on rather than on a gasket like my 90 pickup. I didn't realize that there were two types of windshield applications. If I wanted to upgrade mine to the stainless trim type what would I have to do? Are there slight differences in glass or anything else? Have any of you done this?
The 89-95 model rarely came with a gasket. My 90 has the gasket though which I HIGHLY prefer personally since it makes life easy when it comes time to replace the glass at home. As far as I know the glass is exactly the same, you'd just need to get the trim and clips then either get the urethane and do it yourself or have a glass shop install it and the clips/trim.
Thanks guys, I didn't realize that they made these trucks so different. I like the look of the urethaned ones myself. I may put this on my to do list.
If you have black metal trim on your truck, you might want to take a closer look at it. My 1988 came with a rubber coated metal trim piece(s). I assumed it was plain steel with a rubber coating. Over the years, the coating has dried, cracked and peeled off due to the sun beating down on it. And I was surprised to find that Toyota had rubber coated stainless steel trim to make my cheaper model (base 1988 long bed single cab) instead of making all new cheaper model specific trim. So now, I just need to remove the last remnants of rubber and polish it up a bit and I will have a very nice "chrome" windshield trim.
