The time has come to build another motor, and this is the hardest part for me. The decision of what color to paint it. Such a tough one, I know What color do you think I should paint my block? Keep in mind my truck is green. I'm kinda liking the way vandingo went with a white block, but was also thinking silver/charcoal would look good. But I can't decide. What do you think?
White would get dirty and look charcoal soon enough...So, i'd go charcoal or straight up BLACK! Then you can accent smaller parts with a second color and the block wont overpower everything...where is the homosexual emoticon? Haha
White would look nice due to the fact your truck is green but it would get dirty eventually so charcoal gray sounds nice
Personally I'd go with White. That's what the old timers did back in the day. Made it easy to tell for leaks. If your a good engine builder you don't have to worry about that. The colors you never think of stand out the best. Remember to over prep the block before painting and give it a good coat of etch ( then scuff with maroon scotch pad ) . It makes all the difference. Rattle cans work well but nothing works like Base/Clear . With that being said the color choice is unlimited..
I used aluminum engine enamel on mine. Matches the front cover and head really well. Valve cover and air cleaner were painted as accent along with some other engine bay parts.
I can get base/clear put in rattle cans at my local paint store I'm kinda thinking about gettin some POR15, depending on what colors are available. That stuff can take a beating!
If at all possible. Sandblast the outside of the block before machine work is done. That way you have a clean slate all the way around ( inside and out) . Then rattle can etch ( same as body shop ) dtm primer = direct to metal primer ( etch bites into raw bare metal ) Then give it a good scuff and paint/clear. If you can get base clear mixed, that's to your advantage. You can choose any color under the rainbow. Just remember. A paint job ( no matter on what ) is always 90% PREP.
I used Krylon X metals purple (bomb candy) on the air cleaner, block off plates and voltage regulator. Used testors purple metallic on the valve cover. That color looks pink.
Kinda, but more purple. I don't know if I'll paint anything except the block.. I really like the clean aluminum look, or if it's polished to keep it polished.. And I don't have a external regulator anymore otherwise I could paint that
I hate the regulators and alternators I just haven't swapped a GM one wire in yet. As for paint. Bomb can doesn't leave many choices. If I was to redo it is base clear it with flake. I didn't have a spray gun when I did my motor tho. I need to make it look better again soon.
I ran out of motivation after the whole primer, white, color, clear dance on the parts I did paint anything other than black.
Have it copper plated then clear coated to stay like a shiny penny. Or paint it black and gold-leaf the freeze plugs and the tops of each bolt.
