hey guys! I am yet to actually buy a toyota truck but shopping around all the time, I have my eyes set on a dual cab 1991 hilux in white, (will get photos eventually) but I wont find out if I can get it until the new year, I tried to search 2L engine but the results were all over the place so I thought I would start a thread for it, sorry if it is a repost or what not, and please link me to the other post/s. Anyway I am looking at this ute it has a 2.4L Diesel engine, according to the license plate information it has a 2L Engine, "2L-2428435" and a LN850053977 chassis number. Are these a reliable motor? any known issues with them? any easy mods to the engine to give it some rice points? any advice and tips also? I have never owned anything diesel so im not too sure what im looking for and what can be done to them, thanks in advance guys.
As long as you're not in a hurry to get anywhere you'll be fine. They are reliable but not overly powerful. The later 2lt was a bit better since the t denotes that it is turbo'd so it is more powerful.
I heard they are a bit slow on the up and go, but im not looking for a race car, I already have a sportsbike.. god forbid I get a second vehicle I can go fast enough to lose my license 10 times over haha. Any common mods to them? either to add some rice points or for genuine power gains
I would love a diesel in mine. I wish it was diesel. I envy my buddy that has a Izuzu pup diesel. Fun little truck to ride around in. No power but great millage.
The highest output L series has barely more power than a 22RE (although a lot more torque down low) Just to put things in perspective. That being said the little that I've read about them doesn't show much moddability. Zero off-the-shelf upgrade parts (at least not stateside) and not overbuilt like popular diesels to mod (ie dodge ram/cummins). Meant to be a laid back run-forever slow-and-steady engine just like the 22RE but without the upgradability
