Well the 22r is the carbureted engine & the 22re is the fuel injection. Ive had both & like both lol. I will say that the 22r is much easier to get hp out of, but you can get a good bit of power out of the 22re if you spend the cash. I will say that the 22re that Ive got in my truck now does get better gas milage than the 22r that was in my 88 model truck.

Im not a fan of the v6 engine...Im sure others will agree/disagree with me that. The v6 has been prone to head gasket failure & from what others have told me its just not a good engine. As for performance mods you can also go with a turbo kit on the 22re or have simple mods like a header, crank pulley, cam, bigger throttle body & exhaust. If you decide to go with the 22r then you can replace the carb with a Weber carb, cam & header/exhaust for a good boost in power as well too. Here is a site that has a ton of info on Toyota engines & performace.

Well...thats a tough call me for me lol. Like I said before Ive owned both the 22r & 22re. To be honest I like my 22re better cause its pretty easy to work on & Its got a good bit of power for a 4cyl. As for performance mods Ive got a intake, msd coil/plugwires, pulley set & exhaust...its pretty quick for a extra
cab! I see that you live out on the west coast & Im not sure how tough the regulations are on carbs/exhaust is, but its pretty laid back here on the east side & we can pretty much get away with anything with it comes to engine mods. Maybe some of the carb guys on here will chime in & voice their opinions on the 22r engine so youll have both views!

to b honest im not really worried about all that, the main thing is the noise level, thats wut really gets u in trouble out here. but as long as i'm cruising they really dnt harass. i just want something that can take off when i need it to, because my stock 22re isn't doing much.

when it comes to upgrades, the 22r wins hands down. period.

the stock ECU plain freaks out with changes to air/fuel delivery and does not respond well. making very little actuall gains for the parts put on. simply put, the stock EFI system is crap, you cannot tune or adjust it, and it wont self adjust for changes to the system.

on the other hand if you dont F with it too bad you can get 30mpg easier then a carb. or if you have the money and the time you can throw away the dumb stock EFI, and run mega squirt. i have seen a stock internals 22re have 130hp and 35+mpg with ONLY adding mega squirt and tuning it properly.

carbs are a black art. you can throw some mighty big carbs at the motor but if in poor tune will be worse then stock. it requires learning how to tune your carbs and using a older method of tuning the engine.

you can still get 30mpg with a carb, they are very trouble free with few parts to break or wear out. they work on a simple principle so diagnosing problems isnt that hard. you can also build some monster carb powered motors, they are super easy to tune for higher needs with jets, venturies and such.

i prefer carbs, its what i know, works awesome all the time, and easy (for me).

not so fond of efi, its not something you can fix on the trail with a chunk of wood jammed somewhere, or if it is i dont know where to stick it.

if you want to go all out with power id say the RE is the way to go. replace the stock computer, lower compression pistons and a super or turbo charger.

if your going to do a few basic mods, intake (carb), extractors/exhaust system, cam go the R.

    thats my opinion
