So I'm sure everybody has little tools they have made for various things to make specialty work easier. I have some bent wrenches, a craftsmen 1/4" ratchet I cut the handle in half, and today made a socket for taking out hilux dash switches. They need a spanner type tool with posts. I ground and filed down a 3/8" deep socket. This way I can pull wiper and fan switches without pliers messing up my new dash panel. I will post pics in a bit when it's working for me. Show me some cool tools you guys have made or modified for various stuff.
Here's the switch socket. I used the middle of the flat side on opposite sides of the 6pt. I ran a 3/8" drill bit thru and wobbled it around. Round files the inside a bit. It slips over the fan switch. The posts aren't totally 180* apart so ill make another later that fits the fans better. Works perfect for the wiper pull switches. I use them for other circuits as well.
I used a craftsmen socket. I have found that cutting the tools in half or apart doesn't void the lifetime warranty. I have traded in the cut down 1/4" ratchet. Also swapped a 14mm combo wrench I cut in half. Brought both halves. Can't even remember why I cut it in half lol. Definitely wise to customize the craftsmen tools. Plus I have the ratchet handle halves. Hope to use them for something cool eventually. Lots of uses. Toggle switch extensions, brackets, coat hooks, ect lol.
Made one kinda like yours for getting freewheel off a bike rim.. Worked quite well until I broke the teeth off
I never thought of that when I biked lol. Always used a screw driver and a hammer. If anybody wants a hilux switch tool, I can make one and send it over in the mail. I have a whole drawer of loose sockets for stuff like this.
I got a few at work for Diesel engines I maid a valve spring compressor holder using a large c clamp and a peace of 2 inch gas pipe with a slot cut in it for retainer access ....guys at work use to laff at it until they borrowed it . No more smashed finger tips About a month later mapco tools cam out with a insanely similar device just a pretty version ....I was like Showoff FML ....Mapco truck guy cam up to sell one to me I went to my box was like naw bro been there done that
Ill get some pics today of my random custom tools. Hopefully other people copy them and find use in the ideas.
most of my tools ive been making recently have been for my Buells. Cost to much to by a tool from dealer especially when they are simple to make. I might post up a few tomorrow.
My 1/2" socket breaker bar used to be a four way lug wrench. One side I cut completely off at the crossing shaft, and opposite that I just cut off the (damaged) socket on the end and ground it down so a 1/2" drive socket fits well on the end.
I've got a steering shaft/steering linkage/whatever its called from a dodge truck that I'm going to make into a large breaker bar for trips to the U-pull-it yards. A couple years ago I found the hitch for my truck in a yard and they only wanted $35 for it as opposed to $350 new. I only had a cheapie, Harbor Freight 3/8" socket set with me and worked my @$$ off to get the bolts free, scrounging various car parts to use as breaker bars. I vowed to be better prepared next time. The bar will be about three feet long and will slip over the handle of a 1/2 inch ratchet. I'll post pics when I make it, but it probably won't be too pretty. I figure with that length and 300 pounds of fat-@$$ prying on it, theres nothing I won't be able to get apart... given enough room to use the bar of course. For smaller jobs I have a "turn buckle" large cable mount that I found at a junk yard that makes a great breaker bar.
I always just slip the handle of a floor jack onto my 1/2" ratchet. Works good and you can always use the second half for more leverage.
