Since I bought my first Toyota, ever, just a couple days ago, I have what some of you may think is a stupid question. It's not a stupid question, it's just that I'm ignorant to Toyotas. I want to learn, so I won't be so ignorant.

What's the difference between a HiLux and a Pick Up?

When they started making trucks in the mid 60s they had two body styles. The stout, which only ran one gen I think, and the slightly smaller hilux. In 1976 they stopped calling the hilux the hilux for the usa and called it the pickup truck. Most people refer to the 74-78 body style as a hilux, since half of them were labeled as such in the states. The rest of the world still calls it that, there is no tacoma worldwide, its a hilux. The 4runner is a surf. Hope that helps you out. And welcome.

So, there's no 79 or newer Toyota HiLux in the USA?
    Thanks, I'm still learning.

I believe 99 percent of the people call the four-wheel-drive a hilux up until 84 but don't quote me on that

We have Hilux's, it's just that Toyota started calling them "Truck"s in the United States.

62 toyopet and 76 toyota stout
The stout name started in the late 50's it started as a pickup version of the toyopet master and was known as the materline for the first few years of production unil it's name change, 1960 introduced the toyopet stout RK45 which had very poor sales in Japan so few of these were near given to other countries to start international sales. 1963 and the most familiar style of the stout started international sales and in 1964 a lighter version entered mainly for export sales known as the lite stout, the version of the lite stout for the US market had softer suspension with larger tyres and engine. All versions of the lite stout were eventually replaced by the hino designed and built briska, renamed toyota hilux with toyota drivetrain for two generation, the toyota pickup or truck 1979-83 was actually designed by toyota as the third generation of the stout and second generation of the lite stout originally but due to the international success of the hilux the name stout was dropped except on the RK110 and the stout finally ended production in 2000 YK110 or the stout 2200

I think most people like the international name of Hilux. Which if you are curious about its start, was because it was supposed to be a high luxury compact truck, compared to the datsuns and other early minis. Funny how time changes perspectives on things huh?

My Hilux is much more high luxury than these other compact trucks, honestly. The interior and everything looks more attractive in many possible ways.

High luxury? try making love inside of a Hilux. Turn that A/C but recirculate, you don't want you windows to unfog so hard.
