'87 Toyota Pickup 22r auto 294,000 miles - Completely stock I am definitely not a lead foot...... maybe floored it twice since I've owned it. Mostly city driving with 25% highway. I fill up when it hits E and I usually get between 200-220 a tank. I did the math and it comes out to like 16 mpgs......... thats bad! I just had a tune up done about a month or two ago. Could it be the carb? This is what my carb looks like when the truck is off...... Normal? Thanks guys and gals! Ronnie
That's normal choke plate doesn't set till it receives 12volts from the ignition .then slowly opens as the it gets warmer via rotating on a choke cam lobe then try's to reset itself as much as possible upon cool down tapping the gas when the truck is cold will close it < resets the choke cam lobe . As far as miles per gallon I think that's pretty good 295k on ethonal based gas on a carbed motor some guys get better mpg city driving wil eat up some gas tho . I'm proably 9to 14 city highway forget about it If the truck is fully warm and that plate is not moving all the way u may want to check for binding or a fully functioning choke
Your tank should be a 12.5 gal unit, that puts you around 18 MPG ,about right for your engine running a carb! The EFI engines get around 23-28 with a manual 5 speed!
when i had my 87 i ran to SD and back w one tank...i get around 21-24...all i did is reg tune up set my timing to 8 i think....your probably burning gas....
cinNAMmon - Yup! 195/75/14's..... I think a lot if not all my engine has been rebuilt, or VERY well taken care of but I'm pretty sure the carb is original....... I'm thinking a nice Weber 32/36 could help? I'm not looking for speed out of my pickup, just a little cruiser...... I do want a little more power to climb hills better, my plans are as follows and let me know if I should add something, subtract or keep as is..... Weber 32/36 Header, stock cat and 2 1/4 cat back Slight cam to help with the mid range/top end power Electric Fan (previous owner locked the stock fan so it's constantly spinning - good or bad for city/hwy driving?) That's all I was thinking to do..... A little more kick for those hills. What do you guys think? Ronnie
That locked fan will hurt mpg a little. And if u want more power but not loose mpgs. I would let her breath better. And if tuned right a 32/36 can give you more power.
Yea the fan will hurt a little any parasitic drag on the motor will reduce its efficieny 32/36 will be a great replacement carb just take time to set it up properly . Cams if large enough will reduce mpg so f you keep it small or mild you won't see a bad drop in mpg but is worth the upgrade
Awesome! So if you were me which upgrades would you do first? I plan to do one at a time and I want to do it right! Thanks.
Well if carb is in good working order ..and is not giving you problems .I'd do a electric fan mod either a junkyard electric fan or a slim 12-16 inch aftermarket fan .on a auto on harness with manual override available at jegs.com or summit .com that will free up some space and mpg Second the carb .< kinda expensive ..read up on weber carbs and there tunning procedures to get familiar with them and what you might be up against when switching to a 32/36 . Cam most labor intensive and evolves removing the head bolts and a I always no matter what put a new head gasket on when head bolts are removed .. Mpg truck ..good rotor and cap new wires and plugs clean fuel filter properly adjust valve lash and a E -fan . ..if your in Cali and have emissions .be carful of removing certain items smog items
Where I live the auto 22R/22RE's only got about 17 in town, but my old 22R 4-Speed pulls about 25! The 4WD's fuel injected or not get about 13.
