    Hi guys

For now I am getting the beast on the road with the standard engine, I think the little 1.6 / 12R will be great as a novelty. Before long though I'm sure the bug will bite.

Just listing some thoughts for the benefit of others, & interested in your input.

    4AGE
Still a 1.6 but a genuine 130hp from the later 16v models, it is almost as if Toyota made this engine just to go into these things! Have seen one fitted before, in a car in Japan. Main drawback is the expense of converting to RWD with a decent gearbox, they were available RWD but relatively uncommon and the gearboxes were rubbish.

    22R/2RZ/3RZ
Not very exciting but great truck motors. Hard to find in good condition / mileage / reasonable cost, but come at least come factory RWD with a good box. A little on the thirsty side. Very tough.

    1UZ
This is kinda the dream engine and really the one this thread is all about. Interested to know if anyone has looked at doing this, fitment in my experience is very difficult with these engines into older cars - often foul on steering box as they are very very wide and also fairly long for an engine that is four cylinders long.

    1MZ
A little oddball. 170hp+ front-wheel drive V6, converted to RWD. A lot of hassle and expense to convert to RWD, but this would be a brilliant little engine. Have seen one or two in 70's Celicas previously so it can certainly be done.

If u want the 1uz engine there are several members on this board that have swapped and running 1uz motors . With minimal frame mount modification and the 2rz and 3rz are good motors and respond well to turbo charging I wouldn't mess with a 16 valve 4age unless u plan a high compression big cams motor . A later model black or silver top 165 hp 4age 20 valve would be nice but lots of work like a whole lot

i have a 1uz in my rn22. can't imagine trying to fit headers into the stock frame.

the highlight is it goes down the road rather well and gets 25.5 mpg with 4.10 rear gears. i'm going to go to 3.73 and try to hit 30mpg.

I'm kinda wondering how you'll get a 18% increase in fuel economy with a 10% change in gearing :p

Its not just gearing tho . Light truck large motor engine doesn't have to work that hard from a dead stop

scrub88 - although good input bear in mind that each model is completely different. Fitting in one in an RN8x (for example) doesn't mean it's a cakewalk with a much smaller RN1x model. These engine bays are pretty tight, comparitively :(

Also re: the 4age, in my experience the silver/blacktop (20v) motors are disappointing. extra work and they really don't seem to make any more power over the later 16v motor despite the big claims.

burnzya - I'll have a look for some details on your truck, if no luck I'll PM you.

What no love fro the 3sgte

Toyota used that motor in the tom's castrol supra and rally cars and more

think they used that motor the most of all there other motor's in racing

3SGTE is a great motor, but a dog of a thing to convert to RWD (expense/difficulty). Also unless you get a very late model one, they quite commonly split blocks and/or blow head gaskets. Now what you're after with a new motor :p

My 1uz currently works in an rn20 hilux standard frame. I had to custom the exhaust (similar to this Tight exhaust ) although my passenger side looks like those but my drivers side turns down at the 3rd port to avoid the steering box.

Also had to push the steering box out by 20mm with a plate. I can still use all the standard steering linkages. My steering circle is now 10m(~33ft).

I did cut the gearbox hump out cause the gearbox was too close for my liking (couldn't get my hand in between it and the gearbox) and i wanted my auto shifter to sit higher (i have 1989 supra seats in it which sit much higher than the original ones).

Custom engine mounts (can't use any of the originals) and custom gearbox mount. Getting a tail shaft made up now with an internal yoke.

Queensland transport (Australia) states you need to have 10mm(0.4inch) gap around your motor and box. It JUST fits. I am going to write a build thread soon.
