I have a bumper that is going on a Hilux. Got it from a junkyard. It looks a little rough> ( See pics ) What should I do to prep it? Wire wheel off the crud? Steel wool? Is there such a thing like spray on chrome? If not, what else should I put on? Primer? Silver paint? Or????
First of all, what are your plans for your truck? Do you want to restore it to original or step it up a little? Those old bumpers were never chrome. They were painted silver. You may be able to get away with a spray-on can. I work for Grainger Industrial and we have Rustoleum paints. Hope this helps! Rick
Rick - Thanks for the history. The original bumper has been off since at least 1979. Last I heard it was in a garage somewhere near Lwndale, CA. Probably slag now. Didn't know they were just spray painted silver! Now I know. An Grainger has some really great stuff. Only place I know that has gray pvc couplers.
I heard the reason they look aftermarket is because Toyota shipped all the Hilux's w/o bumpers, they were fitted in the US on the skinny. I plan on stripping mine back to bare, primer with gun, paint body matching color, then clear it.
The interesting thing about the bumpers is that there is a page for the rear bumper in the parts catalog. And yes, the USA trucks were not shipped with a rear bumper. In fact, starting in the 1981 model, they were not shipped with a bed. All the bumpers that were installed on the trucks were a Toyota Genuine Accessory that was dealer installed.
You are so welcome! And yes, WWG has some GREAT stuff. I get to see all the cool stuff by working at the Distribution Center.
