This may be a dumb question. But are the 2wd and 4wd transmissions completely different? I haven't really got a chance to look at either and how they are setup. I figured that maybe the 4wd is the same as a 2wd that just runs through a transfer case? I doubt it, but figured I'd ask. A friend of mine has a good 4wd auto trans sitting in his shed and mine is slipping like a bitch. I'd go eyeball it myself but his phone is a piece of crap and it's impossible to get in touch with him.
You'd have to check and see if anyone makes a bolt on tail shaft conversion for it. The transfer case bolts right on to the back side of the trans and the slip yoke or output flange is on the transfer case.
If it was behind a 22r/re there is about a 99% chance it is an A340h. The transfer case needs to be disassembled to remove it from the trans. While it is physically the same as the A30-40 2x trans it would require them both to be torn down to swap the tailshafts.
The existing trans is a A340h. So the 4wd needs the transfer case dissembled to get it free. 1. how big of a job is that? 2. so will the tailshaft on the 2wd need to be torn down? The entire trans? I'm pretty handy with a wrench. I've built several vw engines, I've done head swaps and crap like that on hondas, work on dirtbikes, etc. So if it's just disassembly/ reassembly I can prob pull it off. Of course if it's like 10 hrs of work or some crap like that I'll prob just keep looking for a replacement or everything for a manual swap.
They are a pretty simple trans to work on but you'll be into it a day at least. Personally I'd just find a replacement and be done with it.
Automatic.... On my 1990 4runner the Model No.03-72 .. I guess toyota doesn't make this transmission. Aisin Warner makes it. I found out this transmission was used in alot of different makes and models around the globe Volvo, Dodge, GEO, Mitsubishi, Isuzu, and Suzuki to name a few.. 03-72 = A-44DL 03-72L = A-45L Hope this Info is Useful My Build Thread: http://www.toyotaminis.com/forum/bu...25/building-22re-1990-4runner-2wd-auto-12356/
