So I was at pick n pull yesterday getting something for my girls car. There was a clean 4Runner there, and I called my friend to see if he wanted the fenders since I knew he had been looking. They where nice, so he said sure and came down. He wanted to look for another car, so I am blaming this on him. While wandering around, I walked by a Lexus with the hood up. Has a 2JZ in it, and no one has pulled any parts off of it yet, looks like it just showed up. Didn't look much because I know I shouldn't. But I keep thinking about it. So if I where to go back and get the motor (wish a 20% off weekend was coming), what do I need to rob from the car?
I'd get the essentials... motor, ecu.... what kind of lexus? there's a butt load of stuff you can get. The auto's really dont go for much, so no need to take that unless you need it. maybe cluster?
i would get basically what i did for my swap.. complete motor and trans, ecu , harness, part if the drive shaft to help get one made to truck rear, mass air flow sens, radiator....I didnt keep all the fancy accessories because i just had bigger fish to fry so to speak...
Ya I figured I would pull the motor and all accessories. They way they price it here is either motor complete, or motor minus accessories. So I can figure out what I dont want later on. I didn't look to see if it was an auto or not, I would just guess it is since its a Lexus. It looked like an SC300, but I didn't pay much attention. I just kinda glanced at the motor and thought "time to leave, this will get you in trouble." I figured I need the ECU, but if its auto, don't I need one from a manual if I swap it over? Are the auto's weak? Or would it be cool to just run that? I know not as fun. If I got it, I would just leave the motor stock and run it, already like double power over the tired 22R I have... I will probably build a radiator honestly. This swap looks like a tight fit in the later trucks, which have a longer engine bay than mine. So I imagine this could be a pretty tough swap. I would like to keep my stock cluster if I can, I really like the first gen dash. Are they electronic or mechanical speedo? Jeremy have you done this swap? Or are doing it? I have been searching but can't find a lot of info for putting these in a truck. I saw the one on here. Honestly the only thing that is intimidating to me about this is the wiring and ECU. I can build whatever I need, its the EFI and electrical stuff I don't understand since I have not done much of it.
Stop thinking so hard toyota wiring is actually simple. Pull the engine harness through the firewall and leave about a foot of wiring attached that goes to the dash. You'll see what I mean when you have the computer in front of you. There will be a handful of plugs that go to the engine and one that goes elsewhere, that is the one you cut leave the others intact. Grab everything engine related obviously and don't forget to leave pigtails for the alternator etc they are on a different harness than the main engine control harness.
Wiring in general confuses me. Just making it work....ugh. I'm a welder, far from a mechanic. My Audi is intimidating, lol. If I do grab this motor I will probably sit on it for a while. I really shouldn't be buying ti at all, and just saving for Stage III stuff on the Audi. But I have this sick need for speeeeeed!
Meh there really isn't much to it you'll be fine. As for your auto trans question the auto if pretty tough. Plus you can set it up for paddle shifting. Building your own shift kit is super easy too.
im building mine as we speak.. would have had it in but doing a few of those "might as well while its apart ungrades".. im gonna try to do a fairly in depth build because like you said there's not that many and I'm running the factory auto and gonna keep all my speedo and gauges stock... The guy helping me is a wiz at wiring and we plan to keep all comforts intact such as power steer and a/c... Im doing the 1uz-fe but in nature should be similar to what you would experience.
I will watch for that. Thanks. Paddle shifter wouldn't really fit the theme of my interior. I want a really stock look. Why do you say that? Anything wrong with the NA motors? Can I not just turbo it later? If I do it now, I'm not really interested in turbo, as fitting an intercooler and radiator up front would be quite a challenge in this truck. I would probably have to run dual side mounts or something, similar to Audi. They don't seem common here, maybe in So Cal they are. This is the first I have seen in pick n pull. There are people selling them in the bay area from time to time (one on CL right now within 3 hours), but usually want $2500+ for just the motor. I'm not sure I'm even serious about this right now, but its appealing. Right now its either this or draw through turbo the 22R and see if it blows up.
European electronics is a different story than Japanese electronics. Most of the time you can just use the automatic 2JZ-GE ECU if you wanna work with a manual. Neutral sensor I believe. Nothing wrong with the 2JZ-GE. They can handle up to 550hp. (Local guy ran his turbo'd 2JZ-GE to about 600hp and the conrod bent). Not bad. I think if you do go 2JZ-GE, you can do the GTE swap later, which is easier. Why? physically, you already did the swap. And then, when you swap over the actual 2JZ-GTE, you'll have the turbo setup there with the proper turbo bottom end. Plenty of options, that's why I love Toyota. Even the 2JZ-GE's will last a looooooong time.
Blocks are the same. Support 1k horse. I've spent the same to turbo my non turbo motor as it would cost for the stock turbo motor
I'm not really into turboing it right now. Even if it just had 200 HP, thats double what I have now. I'm already building something stupid fast.
ok, well you can get the swaps on ebay for cheap for the non turbo ones, and they come with everything you need ready to drop in. A 2jz laying in a yard would worry me a little. who knows how bad the owner drove it to get the car wrecked.
Yeah I know, the rotating assembly i what I'm talking about. Either way, 2JZ's... are still DAMN NICE I think the 2JZ-GE would be plenty on our trucks. Torque baby!
I with twisted screw any and all wiring... my carb will only need 5 wires to start and be self sustaining. NA 2j is way less cool than the turbo but still worth if its low miles or something auto trans are better today than they were 20 years ago so take with grain of salt how bad that car may have been driven.
Side drafts if they make a manifold. But hey its you so you prob. could build 1!!! Or even 6 SU carbs!! Make it look old school! Changing plugs and wires suck BTW.
why not look for a lexus 1uz-fe? aluminum v8, and has already been shoved into an early toyota physically.
if you want to be super unique.... ITB's and a set of TRUE long tube headers.... resonator and nice exhaust... She'll sound sooo good. lol.
