This 89 22re has an intermittent non starting issue that's driving me crazy.

Every once in a while I turn the key and NOTHING, but sometimes it fires right up.

Is there some kind of relay on here???

 

efi relay, starter relay, ignition relay. does the dash lights even come on when you cycle the key? i've had it before on my truck where nothing would come on even when turning the key (no lights, power to anything, etc) found out it was loose/poor connection on the +side of battery. cleaned and tightened, fired right up!!

works 60% of the time, every time!

+1 check/clean the heavy duty connections. next most likely are the starter contacts. after that I'd say ignition switch. lastly I'd say bad relay. Just by commonness.

If the dash lights don't come on either, then it's pretty much just the ignition switch or possibly a relay or wiring problem.

 

Thanks guys, but looks like I got hit with a combination. Gotta hit starter and on top of that, my battery is screwed. :'(
