okay. i have a W50 in my 78. i will be swapping in a W58 trans. 77yoter says he has one from a truck. so ill try to get that and document the few mods for the swap. for my truck, and any 78 and back it requires cutting and welding the trans crossmember. the mounting area needs to go back 2". think of how a frame Z is done for bags, but front to back and not up and down. i may also tweak that angle a hair to help driveline angle.

im going to quote the convo we had thread jacked in the other thread on the NW meet and eat

sweet. that is the same i came up with doing measurements at the junkyard. although i found the ones from an 81-84ish celica with a 22R had the stick in the same location. maybe that rear section is swapable. because i need the stick to be in the same spot as before cuz of the console im building. a little forward i could do i suppose though since it isnt done yet. how far forward was it? so i can change my console to match. or try to find the back from an celica since it was in the same spot. as are the 79-83 trucks. but those arent W58s

I never thought having a conversation with yourswlf could be so much fun :D haha. The W58's are sweet. still not too heavy, little stronger and can hold a decent amount of abuse as long as you dont get traction :) ....like me....nope, im still spinning.

Keep us posted, we love pics and projects

one thing i forgot the tranny has an electronic speedo gear housing not the cable type
but i was down at toyota on saturday and they said another w58 housing will fit in there

and this is how i found out it was a truck tranny not a celica tranny like i was told

    damn small town junk yards:doah:

so the speedometer can be changed by changing the rear section?

and traction? haha...if there is sand on a dry road up a slight grade i can barely touch the gas. i need more than a 195 out back again. when these are worn out ill put on some 215 or 225s again. they tucked on the 16s. i could possibly fit a 235.

no need to change the rear section its the piece that holds the speedo gear on the side of the tail shaft

    77yoter,
That electronic speed sensor must be from a 88-92 supra with the w58. The w58 from a celica would only have a mechanical setup.

from what the toy dealership told me its from a 92-95 truck the supra was still mechanical like the celica and they said it should be interchangable with another w58

i would just go to the junkyard and pocket a mechanical housing cause toyota wants like 30 bucks for it

but if you do want the tranny ill be around all weekend most likely just let me know

feel free to skim the bibble babble. lol. i got the new trans in today. 77yoter brought me a W55 from a car of his the other night. was in much better shape than mine visually. so today i yanked the old motor and trans out. swapped the trannys and put it all back in. i need to either slightly modify the throwout arm on this or get the proper one for the trans. ill probably just modify this. it has a dimple for the slave cylinder where mine had a hole. simple fix. other than that, everything bolted up. no cutting or welding needed. tomorrow ill put all the fluids back into the motor/trans/radiator and hang the exhaust system (scraped up straight pipe w/ glasspack lol) and it should be good to go. hopefully the shorter 1st gear wont be too short. but, nothin gets a little truck off the line like a 3.5 first with 4.10 rears. lol.

my shifter is forward more than the stock tranny. i thought i had a celica tranny but i guess i'll have to check case markings. is there a "W58" stamped anywhere on the case?
