Hi guys. I know it's been done before. Can anyone please share exactly what needs to be done?

I bought a tilt steering column (I forget what year-1980-something) last year for my truck. Since my steering column got broken by vandals a few days ago, I figured I might as well try to install the tilt while fixing my truck.

I did not get the intermediate shaft that connects to the steering box. In fact, I haven't looked closely under the hood yet. Can I use the existing intermediate shaft? What about the steering column mounting holes? Do they line up? Can I use my existing steering wheel, signal assembly and ignition lock?

BTW, I have power steering and 5-speed on my '84 truck.

Thanks for help. In the meantime, I'll do a search on this forum for info on this subject.

I don't know if 3rd and 4th gen trucks have interchangable columns. I do know that all steering wheels from 79-95 fit the same splines on toyotas. Car and truck, so some of the cooler stock wheels on SR5s and cars can be used. As for the rest, I don't know. But hopefully the one detail helps lol

My truck and the donor tilt column are 3rd generation.

It should be swappable then I would assume. Toyota usually made the trucks ready to go for whichever option came down the line.

I can't afford the down time and any delay because of mismatched parts. LOL, my wife would definitely razz me.

Wife: "Do you know what you're doing?"
    Me: "sort of......"

Wife: "Have you or anyone you know done this before?"
Me: "No, but how hard can it be?"

Wife: "Take it to the dealer."
"Me: "Nope. They'll tell me that only 1984 2WD truck parts will fit onto a 1984 2WD truck, and nothing else. They'll let my truck sit for the whole day and charge me for that assessment. And of course, they'll have to fit me into their busy schedule, and I'll have to make arrangements to drop off and pick up my truck."

What I WILL do is find a 1984 donor non tilt steering assembly. Then I'll measure and compare everything, especially the intermediate shaft connections.

    Will keep you all posted.

I just did this swap a month or so ago. It's a direct swap nothing special needed other than the delay box and short harness behind the passenger kick panel.

    Thanks guys.

White, what's the delay box and short harness for, since it's far away from the steering column?

Odds are your tilt column will have a wiper delay switch and the control box for that delay is located behind the passenger kick panel. There is a short wiring harness that is needed to plug in the delay box.

No problem, the wipers will still work even without the delay box you will just have low and high same as you do now.

Crazy person. Delay Would Be amazing! Forget the tilt wheel I'll get it for the delay. Tilt would be cool though.

I think that the intermediate shafts are gonna be different. If memory serves the 4x4 ones have an extra universal joint to allow for the down angle coming out of the firewall. I think that you would have to mix and match parts to make it work.

It may but IDK for sure you are better off finding a 84-88. If 91 column is out u can look at the two and compare.
