ok guys sp I'm trying to figure out how to wire my starter non of the original wires are there. any body got pics or ideas on how to hook up the power and a wire to the switch?
Pretty simple. The large (2-4 ga.) wire runs from the (+) battery terminal to the large bolt on the starter motor. A smaller wire from the start position of the ignition switch goes to the contact on the starter solenoid. A Haynes manual for your toy is a good investment. It carries wiring diagrams for your truck. A simple volt meter and you should be good to go.
Ign switch should have 4 wires, 1 battery positive, acc, ign, start. Take off the bottom cover and look at where the wires are soldered to the backside of the ign switch. Theyre labeled bat, acc, ign,st. Run the wire from the switch to the starter. I bought a FSM on ebay when i was rewiring my 72 2nd gen, il get a pic of the ignition switch page and post it when i get off work. Hopefully the wires are the wires are the same color. Or you can take a multimeter and check the wires that way
'78 has a plastic connector behind the ignition switch cylinder. Wires go by color code. On my '78 the solenoid wire exits the harness by the oil pressure/fuel pump cut off pigtail. Should be a single 1/4" blade connector. Best to test for power while someone turns the key to start.
damn thing doesnt have wire colors. But i think black/white stripe is the starter wire off the switch
Thank everyone I'm gonna try and see if those wires are there. I have a fsm but mines doesn't say what color wire it is.
This is why I suggested the "Haynes" manual. It has complete factory wiring diagram(s) along with wire color codes. Chiltons and most other publications don't carry it.
