Is there a bushing or some way that I could tighten up my shifter? It shifts ok but its kind loose and sloppy feeling.

theres a plastic bushing and the bottom of the shifter, most likely held in by snap rings, its about 10 bucks at the dealership

i read this on an eairlier post from ateam20x dated 7/9/2007

at the bottum part or the site on marlincrawler thats the white looking thing thats what you need to replace. what year is your truck ? some trannys you just PUSH and turn the LOCK and and the stick shift will pop out. on some other years there are bolts(not sure though cant remember) tell me your year?

I know thats what I need to replace, just trying to figure out what trans I have. Its a 87 xtra cab. I have been reading that there is some kind of ring that needs to be removed in order to pull the shifter out. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe I'll try giving them a call tomorrow.

Check out this page and you should be able to figure out your tranny...

The shifter comes out by pushing in/down on a retaining ring/collar around it's base... you have to push the ring/collar in enough to turn it and then it pops up releasing the shifter. They all have bolts around the base of the shifter but they do not need to be removed to remove your shifter, the ring/collar has a spring under it that keeps it locked in place, thats why you have to push it in/down and turn to release.

The Marlin replacement part is much better than the original, stronger and is designed to be installed from the top. definately your best bet!!!

Its been awhile but I finally changed my shifter bushing. I ended up just buying the one from the dealer.

my shifter was very easy to remove. No pushing or twisting. I had the one with the four screws.

Heres the new bushing. As you can see the old one on the left is missing half the bushing.

Its also a good idea to replace the piece on the bottom. My old one was really worn out.

My shifter came off by unbolting the four screws. From my understanding, some shifters have to be pushed down and turned to be remove.

Probably didn't need to do this or I should have used gear oil but I put some grease on it before I reinstalled it. I had to do some cleaning because some of the old bushing was stuck on the ball thingy.

And here it is installed. Now my shifter is as tight as a........new shifter:)
