Hey guys I am trying to weigh my options about putting rear disc brakes on my truck

At this point I am leaning toward swapping in a Ford Explorer axle

let me know what ideas you have or what you've done...

PS does anyone know exactly how wide the rear axle is WMS to WMS (wheel mounting surface)???

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas

Im in the same boat... I just found this on cardomain

    http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2637442

and here is some of the stuff i found just searching the net

    Pros:
    - Can be purchased for less than $100 at a Pick-your-part
    - Good for moderate V8 power
    - Lots of aftermarket support (Gears and LSD)
    - Same wheel bolt pattern as stock 2wd PU
    - Avail with rear discs on later model Explorers
    - Bolts in using Toyota brackets and leaf springs (No welding)

    Cons:
    - 2-3in wider than stock 2wd rear
    - Uses Standard lugs instead of metric
    - Pinion is slightly offset to passenger side
    - Requires custom driveshaft

I'd like to keep my Supra rims and they use the special Toyota centric lugs.
Could we get the stock Yota lugs pressed out and then pressed on to the Explorer axle.

I would really hate to have to put anything off a ford into my yota..

Unless you plan on putting some serious power in front of it (or a whole drive train) I would just convert to rear disks using downey offroad of sky manufacturing brackets. the toyota 7.5 maybe kind of a pain to find some gears and such compared to the ford, but its all out there if you look. If you want to do something REALLY cool and not swap inferior parts I say you put in a supra IRS

    nonthing inferior about ford axles.....

and the downey rear disc brakes are way to expensive gto what it would cost me to convert to disc adn get a posi/lsd.

I will admit that ford axles are pretty tough. I just don't think it will be worth it without a motor... if you have to worry about a funky pinion angle that will wear your gears out ,or you have to deal with wheels not fitting and probably a even more narrow wheel selection. Guys in tacomas swap pre tacoma rear axles all the time to tuck bigger wheels and lay frame.

Considering the Ford 9" has been THE axle for drag racing for years you could say a ford axle is tuff...
I hate fords... but it is an axle not a car...
This axle would work quite well if you are running a high offset rim and a spacer of 1.5 to 2" to make the rims fit.
I was and combined with the perches lining up, a beefy 8.8" rear and dics brakes with an easy to adapt ebrake and posi... it was perfect
I swapped to a no spacer rim... but here is the thing... the one issue that worried me was the offset diff... but if you shorten just the "long" axle to the length of the "short" axle side, you get a centered diff with no offset and a rear that is almost the same width as the stock toy rear. and although this messes up my already lined up perches I have decided to do a 4 link with coilovers so I won't need the perches anymore anyway...
considering I can do this rear for a lot less money than converting my toyota 7" and have a better rear... this is the way to go whether I have e big motor or not, and if I ever do jack up the ponies... I'm ready!

Dont worry I have more than enuf power now :D This is why I'm researching for a better rearend.... and if Disc brakes are included thats a plus!!!! There are several guys running this rear end and dont have any problems with the offset pinion.

Does anyone know how much it's offset?

The Downey disk kit runs around $1200,GM rotors & calipers, not slotted!!
Twisted Mini's did a set up for around $200,you can find the post @ Street Souce or YotaScene.com.
Also a guy in Canada is making a great looking set up, & Wilwood has a real great set up,just very expensive!!

Just talked to the LC tech last week, their kit is the Downey one,not slotted rotors & single piston caliper. Would be better using the set up Seth has, & get a slotted rotor!!
    I still want to run the Wilwood calipers, 2 & 4 piston!!
