So, i have some excessive play in my steering column thats only gotten worse over time.... With no powersteering and 18x8" rims (at one point) I'm sure that didn't help, lol.

The play isn't coming from the lower part of the steering column (in the engine bay)...

I was wondering if the U-joint in the steering column can be replaced?

I know my idler arm has a little play, but thats when im cranking on the wheel.... I can move my steering wheel like 2-3" with just one finger, its that lose! And you can hear the slack being taken up under the dash(clunk clunk, back/forth).

The clunking sound is probably the ball joint or the tie rod ends. Check the steering components to see what worn out and replace them

I hear a clunk in my shaft as well. I have new tie-rods and drag link. If I open my hood and grab the shaft coming out of the firewall about 1 foot down and pull back and forth on it I hear a looseness. I have a tilt column to swap into it one of these days, but I always wonder what is loose ??

I've got a crappy camera phone video of it i will post when i get home...(at work).

When moving the wheel, the sound is obviously in the cab and less than a foot from the steering wheel that i'm moving....(In the steering column).

Im almost positive the only thing it could be is that universal joint....From torqing on it all the time w/ no power steering and tires 2x as wide as stock...

Just curious if anyone else has had the issue and if u need to swap out the whole column or if the joint can be replaced

I have that issue (had 19s when I bought it) and I'm thinking its actually my steering box.

lift the truck, move the tires, see where the slack is.
