Has anyone had new keys made for these trucks? I have tried Walmart, pepboys, and an independant auto parts store and I cant find a key that works. All the blanks the are using are way to long and to thick. I thinking of trying the dealership next but they are about 35 miles out of the way for me. Does home depot carry the right blanks? Thanks.

I had to go to my toyota dealer for the blanks, they are cheap....but you might have to call in advance to have them order some in.

Looks like Ill be going to the dealer. Do the dealer keys look like factory keys? or are they like the standard cheap looking keys you get at walmart?

All in what you pay for. You can get cheap keys or toyota blanks but you will pay more. I get cheap keys for $9 and toyota keys for $18 but they last longer..better metal and stronger.

I just got off the phone with toyota about a key. They want $16 for a blank but they told me it was too old to trace the key and they don't have the code for my key in their system. Does anyone know if sears can make this key? I have an older key for an fj40 that was made at sears probally 10 or 15 years ago that is the right blank.

I took my key to an old, local locksmith. A real locksmith (not the ones in home depot ect.) should have no problem making you another key and will probably have the blanks in inventory. Mine did.

I also took my business to a local locksmith, although he had the Ilco keys. I did get a hold of some TEQ keys for my truck and had him cut them for me. And yes, the dealership will no longer have the key code in their system. I had my friend at Toyota parts cut me one with the key code and it was way off. BTW, a good parts counter staff should be able to trace any key at any time.

I suggest you just order a key from the Toyota dealer. The part number is: 90999-00085 or if you want the one with the plastic protector at the top (90999-00212). I paid a tad over $6.00 for one. It's a good investment rather than you driving all around town trying to find one that will fit.

Keep us posted on your decision!

    Rick

I had a key copy and it open the door, but couldn't start the truck. I compare it to the original and notice that the new one's tip was about 1/8 longer. So I file it off and now it works.

Well I ordered that key off ebay suggested by garagedoorman. It came quickly and I was surprised that it was made in the USA. had the key copied and it worked with the door but was a little thick with the ignition. The guy at the locksmith told me that my cylinders were going out. after putting some graphite lubricant in the lock it started sliding in and it works. The new key also looks good.

The key I have for my 88 it says "Ilco" and the numbers are "X137" & "TR33". Just incase anyone needs to reference my key. It works great.

On newer ones they could do it with a vin but on older ones the code is no longer in the system.
